If your hair is feeling a little boring these days, consider using a curling iron to create subtle waves like this beautiful woman.
Natural Curly Hair Short Cut

QA with the model Ashley Wylie Hairstylist / Barber @ Melrose Mcqueen Salon in Atlanta Ga How would you describe this look? This style is a play on curly hair on a short shaggy bob. To give her head and face a more defined shape, I like to make her ends a little more blunt. I give her shorter layers so that her curls can spring up and give a rounded shape to the haircut. The suggestions that someone feels about it? As far as maintaining the style I’d be searching for Evo products like their curl balm liquid rollers to protect the curls and prevent them from friction. To add some density and texture, Evo’s multi-purpose Mcqyver mousse. This cut in styling time should be almost effortless. Only wash the items during the wet scrunch of the hair, then let your curls work their magic. No need to clean!
Bob Fine Hair Short Layered
How would you characterize this look? This is a slightly face frame layered bob. I love this cut on women who want to create volume in the crown that also creates the most flattering angular look. This embraces the shape of the head and helps frame the face and facial features with the outer layers. The suggestions that someone feels about it? This customer has a lot of curls so we opted for an express keratin. This is a great treatment to give a youthful appearance to your hair and to cut down on styling time. Especially if your hair is rough and unruly due to gray hair, I highly recommend it. If you do not have access to such a smoothing treatment, consider any lightweight de-frizzing products such as Wow Dreamcoat and Speed Dry or Goldwell Kerasilk smoothing fluid before blow drying and Kerasilk moisture barrier spray after dry or heat styling has been blown.
Dinging the subtle highlights further improves the texture of the cut and blends some gray around the eye. The flexibility with styling options is my favorite thing about this style. So many ways can be styled, but this picture shows so much texture and movement that I love the natural waves! The suggestions that someone feels about it? This look is flexible and can work for most textures / densities of the hair and forms of the head. This cut can help remove heavy hair bulk or lift finer hair. Nevertheless, it is important to consider styling strategies and the use of the material. With a 1-inch curling iron rotating the curls back and forward while leaving 1-2 inches of ends out at the end of the iron, this waved style can be done very easily. A heat-protective texturizing spray and a mild hairspray would be the things to consider. When using heat on your hair, always use a heat-protective. The textured spray we used here (Kevin Murphy’s doo.over) was sprayed for extra lift at the new hair growth and then through the ends to improve the cut’s flexibility and movement. Then we finished for some hold with a light hairspray (session.spray flex of Kevin Murphy). This cut can be restyled for a second day for a messy feel for someone looking for lower maintenance hair.
QA with Emily Murphy Hairstylist style creator @ Trend Setters Hair Salon at Taunton Ma How would you describe this look? It’s a sassy chic look. This client has beautiful skin and blue eyes so that her face is characterized by the slice. Giving her hair a more full look and feel. I love the waves that are classic. For a time-savvy and flawless finish style, it’s my go-to. The color adds a touch of boldness and fun! This look requires a great deal of maintenance. After 4/6 weeks, the toners fade. Prepare to frequent the salon more often in order to maintain a true pigmented color. If the client’s skin is naturally white, the color is easier to achieve. Silver hair is a perfect way to move from coloring to natural gray growing!
Thick Hair Super Modern Layered Bob
How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite? Thi is a state-of – the-art bob. I like it because it’s flexible and up-to-date. What items would you suggest for this look to be preserved and recreated? I advise all my customers that a great finished look will start with a good shampoo and conditioner when it comes to fashion maintenance. Next, a volumizing foam / mousse and some root lifter are recommended throughout the top scalp area followed by a large round brush blowout. Finally, I suggest a spritz of light and elastic spray that retains enough while still allowing for movement. What kind of customer would you recommend this look for?
Spikey Layered Pixie
Design Designer Stacey Shuler-Abdella QA.
It is suitable for textured hair that is straight or has a slight wave, mild to coarse. The cut can be customized to fit with any form of the head. What’s your best tip for someone looking at this look? Make sure you find a stylist with short hair cutting experience and ask for advice on practical styling tips. Please consider creating your look with the items that your stylist uses. Without the right tools it’s hard to recreate your look!
Short and Sweet Pixie With Glasses

Elena Gatzios QA with Elena Gatzios Stylist @ Beauty by Elena G Central Florida How would you describe this look and what is your favorite? This is a chic, year-round fashion-forward pixie with lighter hair. My absolute favorite thing about this look is how flexible it is. So many different ways can be worn and every style looks like a different haircut! It even looks great with glasses for older women! In order to help create and maintain this look, what items would you recommend? What kind of person would work best for this look? This haircut is good with any hair texture, but it looks best if the hair is on the side of moderate and thick. Dimensional color enhances this cut’s best features. With this cut you can do bold colors, but I’d be cautious about positioning. If you don’t put bold colors in the right place you might throw off the whole look. What’s your best tip for someone looking at this look? Feel comfortable in your own skin because a good portion of your face and neck is exposed to this short haircut. You need to go to the salon every four to six weeks for maintenance to keep this style looking its best.
Phuong Tran QA with> Phuong Tran Stylist @ Sukis in Vancouver Bc How do you explain this cut and color and what’s your favorite thing about it? In order to help create and maintain this look, what items would you recommend? My favorite product is a professional L’Oréal product called Next Day Hair to achieve this curly textured look. It is a spray of mineral texture with some hold so it gives the hair some volume of grip and an effortless look. What kind of person will fit well with this look? It would be great to look at anyone who needs a dynamic style that has the potential to be fun. For older women, when styled smooth, it may look a sleeker and more classic hairstyle, whereas if styled curly and textured, it is more edgier. How could somebody at home recreate this style?
Allison Nahoopii
QA with> Allison Nahoopii Master Stylist and Photo Consultant @ Color Queen Salon at Honolulu Hi How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it? For this look, what items do you recommend? Consider the softness and shine of Aquage Silk Oil and the light grip of Kenra hairspray. What kind of person will fit well with this look? Although this is a traditional and fairly universally flattering look for older women, the wearer should wear short hair with confidence and comfort. What kind of tip would you send to someone who is or already has this look? How could somebody at home replicate this style? 1. Towel dry hair thoroughly. 2. D skin oil from mid to end sizes. 3. Use your blow dryer and use your hands until the hair is 80% dry, then use a round or flat brush to smooth and shape up to 100% clean. 2. Finish with a hairspray light lock. Creative Blue Purple Bob
QA with Sara Bierman Owner / Independent Stylist @ Salon Luxe in Appleton Wi How would you characterize this look and what’s your favorite? What items would you suggest for this look to be preserved and recreated? The best way to get more quality out of these fun colors is to use a great sulfate-free shampoo and rinse cool water. With a nice root lift and an all over voluminous foam, we styled this look to add a voluminous yet sleek finish! What kind of customer do you suggest this look for? I guess you can have fun with your makeup! If your customer wants to find out what they like and how happy they are with it. Incorporate these things to create a living style every day while using your creative skills!
I recommend Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep to offer the look of the beach and Aveda Thickening Paste to get some completeness in the hair follicles. You can use the paste to split the hair around the edges as well. I’m using it on hot, wet hair. Please rub it in your palms before using it! I suggest that you finish with Hairspray Aveda Air Control. This is my favorite hairspray since it’s more like a texture / light hairspray. Depending on how you use it, it can give you great hold or more of a loose grip. What kind of customer do you suggest this look for? I recommend the girl-on – the-go look. I get it that our time is the most precious thing we’ve got. For everyday life, this is a fast and easy hairstyle. Hair It would be fine to medium density perfect for this look. It’s also slightly curly! A square round triangle would be the best face shapes and of course oval can pull off anything! Long Undercut Pixie
QA with Robin Spaulding Professional Stylist and Educator @ Sashay By Salon in New Orleans How would you characterize this look and what’s your favorite? What items would you suggest for this look to be preserved and recreated? I recommend Kadus Professional Xtra Strong Mousse for flexible holding when blowing to create a great base for the hair. I suggest that the Kadus Pro Fiber Gum show the look and the feel and stay. What kind of customer do you suggest this look for? Clearly, this look can be pulled off by many men. For a client with a longer face, I customized this cut by throwing longer pieces around the front to soften his look. I feel like a longer front allows someone who isn’t used to cutting pixies to transition.
QA with Chelsea Wright Hairstylist style maker @ Hair the Wright Way in Roanoke Va How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it? One of my highlights is this modernized chin-length bob because it’s so flexible. For elegance, it can be playful and fun or elegant in style. In the finishing details, we use a light razor technique to complement a carefree look. We used Redken Extreme Shampoo and Conditioner to keep her hair in optimal condition. I always recommend a protein-based reinforcement system to protect and repair weakened hair. Her program is simple and tailor-made. We love the feature as well as the smell. Redken Satin Wear offers shine and bounce heat protection. In order to accentuate fun flippy layers, a small dab of Rewind Texture Paste is used after blow drying. We sealed the Redken Triple Take hairspray deal to make her look last all day! What kind of customer do you suggest this look for? This style can really elevate the bone structure and accentuate it. In particular, common facial shapes such as oval and round look great. This look is designed to fit your personality, so for all ages I suggest it. The cut looks incredibly textured or smooth and most flatters from the nape to the jawline with a clean line. A natural body also shows off volume and texture on fine to medium skin. With a sassy bob, you just can’t go wrong!
I use HairWiz Sparkle Shine Spray to keep the natural shine Bed Head Pomade Stick in place to create the wispy look and HairWiz Magical Spritz. There is a relaxer for this particular client. Thanks to the choppy layers cut into the hair that were created using HairWiz Choppy Shears, she works out and wanted a no-fuss cut. With Nairobi Styling Foam, she can shampoo and condition her hair mold it down, then tie it down with a scarf or strips until dry. Use a 1/4-inch flat iron to mist the Sparkle Shine over the entire head. Simply start at the top and bevel the iron slightly around the whole head in a circle pattern. To finish the style of the finger until you achieve the desired look. What kind of customer do you suggest this look for? I love this Windy City Pixie versatility. It can be worn by almost anyone!
QA with fashion maker Tessa Diverse Beauty Designer @ Cambridge Salon Parastar Spa How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it? I’d describe it as funny and sassy. I enjoy being made with a razor and slide slicing tons of texture. This cut would look great, classic and sleek, or stylish pumped up. I suggest using the flat wrap blow dry technique to recreate this feel. When clean, use the roots (in this case L’Oreal) and through the mids and ends of your favorite surface dirt. L’Oreal Wild Stylers works best with salt spray. Take a small amount of light keep styling wax heat it in your palms to finish off the look and then create the pieces around your head. What kind of customer do you suggest this look for? For the on-the-go or businesswoman who has fine textured hair and not much time, this style will fit well. If you just refresh the look every morning over washing and restyling every day, it can really cut down on styling time. I believe that most face shapes can fit well with this cut because you can adjust it to give the oval face shape illusion.
Rounded Bob Short Cut

QA with Junya Sakurai Hair Designer / Founder. Hello in Honolulu How would you characterize this look and what’s your favorite? The beautifully round shape is my favorite thing about this short bob hairstyle. It’s a perfect look at the back and side. What items would you suggest for this look to be preserved and recreated? What kind of customer do you suggest this look for? With normal straight hair or slightly curly hair, this is a great look. It can work with all the shapes of the eyes. This haircut is very simple from day to day to wear as well!
Blue Highlights Really Thin Pixie
I think this look will work with a range of textures and many face shapes compliments. It’s a very low maintenance style and two looks together in a striking way, the swept bang and undercut melt.
Black Undercut Pixie
What’s your favorite thing about this look? The versatility is my favorite thing about this look! In many different styles, it’s wearable. She may wear it sleekly or very messy, or right or front to the left. It can also be dressed up on days when she feels extra sassy. It’s relentless for girls over 50! I think that women over 50 should be able to wear short hairstyles in different styles depending on your mood or occasion. What products do you recommend for this look to be maintained and recreated? It’s as simple as it gets to keep this feel. I cut the sides over the comb with a clipper and a guard of 6 mm. The top is cut with the cutting techniques of the point and screen. Just blow it in the direction you want to wear it with some beach spray (such as Osis+ Session Label Salt Spray) to recreate the look and style it with a soft wax that stays soft all day long. I prefer Matte Crà ̈me Matte Wax Huge Hold Tigi Bed Head Styling Manipulator. The look is suitable for all ages and is perfect for women with short hair affection. Age is only a number and if you feel good, you’ll make it look good! This is the perfect hairstyle for thin straight hair for older women. Grey hair is often a bit stubborn, but if you thin it out a bit on top, that’s no problem at all.
Classic Disconnected Pixie
How are you going to describe this look and what is your favorite? This is a disconnected pixie for women over 50, which is very common among short hairstyles. The undercut is my favorite part of this look. I love how the broken length lies over the rasped section producing a strong but subtle combination of texture and dimension. What items would you suggest for this look to be preserved and recreated? Texture products such as dry shampoos matte pastes texture sprays and wax sprays will be the best products to preserve and replicate this look. The type of product you choose, it will work to encourage you to travel and separate to achieve the dimension. Unite’s Conundrum Paste styling cream would be my personal favorite for this look. What kind of customer would you recommend this look for? I personally do not obey the common rules associated with choosing a design as far as face shape is concerned. I think every customer should choose whatever cut they want to make them feel good. If I need to make small adjustments to flatter their individual features, that’s what I’m going to do!
What kind of customer do you suggest this look for? This style works best for wavy-to-wavy, medium to thick hair. To look good, it doesn’t really require a lot of effort and can be easily styled formally or casually, making it ideal for all lifestyles.
Kannon Howerton Master Stylist and Director of Education @ Rooted Aveda in Draper Ut How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it? I wanted to create a modern take on a short pixie by leaving the length and soft texture in the back and the sides right by the ear where you don’t usually see the size. I love the versatility of this haircut and the styling options you have! What items would you suggest for this look to be preserved and recreated? The great thing about this haircut is that everything in the haircut is the shine and piecy-ness. I used the Smooth Infusion Style Prep and Nourishing Styling Cream of Aveda to prepare and style their hair to help add moisture and protect the hair from heat while leaving the hair smooth. To accentuate the texture and textures throughout the cut I finished with Aveda’s Control Paste. For anyone who wants a low maintenance haircut that still leaves you looking modern and contemporary, I recommend this haircut. It has a way to make guests feel sassy and sexy without the feeling of trying too hard. It’s perfect for many face shapes as well because it’s easy to customize for the needs of your guest. To flatter the head, you can change the length in the front. For s thick to medium in density, and straight or curly hair, I recommend this. It eliminates enough weight that it feels light and moves and can encourage those curls to give life.
Easy Gray Graduated Bob with Bangs
QA with Lolo Pisani Professional Stylist Stylist @ Tangerine Salon in Long Beach Ca How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it? This look is a bob graduated from the A-line. What I love about this look is that with an edge, it’s simple! What items would you suggest for this look to be preserved and recreated? To keep this look at home, I would suggest that a mousse such as R+Co Chiffon be added to towel dry hair before blowing. It is possible to use a paddle brush for a sleek look or use a circular brush to achieve size. Finish the look with a hairspray elastic grip. My preference is the outer space of R+Co. This look will flatter a variety of shapes of the eyes. The cut can be adjusted to suit just about anyone’s degree of graduation and fringe style in size!
Shag
‘
Thinning Hair Shaggy Pixie
QA with Jacqueline Young Salon Owner style creator @ Switch Hair Design in Australia This is a shaggy pixie look. It’s a long razor cut with an undercut on top. My favorite thing about this style is that it proves that it can still be feminine stylish and sexy at any age with very short hair! What products do you recommend for this look to be maintained and recreated? Before blowing the hair, I used Davines Volu Hair Mist to add volume to the hair without weighing it down. I used the Davines This is a texturizing powder from the collection More Inside after I blow dried. This will give you texture and definition of volume instantaneously. It’s perfect for hair that’s fine. I’ve done with Davines This is a More Inside Medium Hairspray. This will give hold and structure to your skin, but it can still be done. What kind of customer would you recommend this look for? The pixie shaggy is really easy to style! The better the more textured and the better lived. Best of all, the feel of just rolled out of bed never looked so good. This look will be easy to manage even the busiest or not so good at doing their hair user!
Long Bangs Layers
How would you describe this look and what is your favorite? This particular customer is very important to me. She’s my wife, a two-time survivor of breast cancer. Her look is supposed to be very normal as she is a senior high school teacher with special needs at a class. She is 80% gray and wanted to blend gray versus permanent hair color, especially due to chemotherapy sensitivity to the scalp. I applied a ten-minute Demi permanent level 10 golden blonde that made this color very natural, allowing her Arctic ice highlights to be seen. My favorite things about this hair model are how organic the quick and simple application of colors looks and how well it suits the features and lifestyle needs of the customer. In a one-length bob with round layers, I cut her hair so she can keep curling all day long. To order to maximize curl hold and minimize a rounder shaped face, I cut a side swooping heavy fringe blending it into a face frame. What items would you suggest for this look to be preserved and recreated? What kind of customer would you recommend this look for? This client’s flat hair is very short. Holding her hair at medium length offers a more complete look and the ability to keep curls all day long. The face frame minimizes the round faces, creating more oval and symmetrical appearance. Coloring her hair with shorter processing time and using a semi-permanent hair color of 10 volumes meets the needs of her scalp and style. Her lifestyle is always on the go, so she needs a fast, simple but stylish and trendy style.
Rainbow Dynamic
Singer Rihanna’s image was the catalyst she put in. As you can see, both of these beautiful ladies compliment this theme. The great thing about these hairstyles is that they can be changed to fit the shape of the frame or head. I’m also a huge fan of applying vibrant colors for my retired customers as they’re no longer obstructed by rules.
Youthful Gray Bob
QA with> Studio Deux in San Dimas Ca How are you going to describe this look and what’s your favorite? This offers a youthful look to someone who wants to embrace their natural gray but still has a sense of style. It’s rough and brittle like most gray hair hers. And it has been too difficult for her to do bi-weekly touch-ups since she retired. We slice off the back about six inches to eliminate the bulk and give it a subtle a-line with mixed layers. All this makes it easy for her at home to style this cut. What items would you suggest for this look to be preserved and recreated? I used a light spray to finish it off because of the natural gray hair and some styling products that can dull the skin. Brazilian Blowout Spray Shine and Verb Ghost Wax are some of my picks. What kind of customer do you suggest this look for? Growing your gray hair takes a lot of patience. It is a slow process that most consumers are unable to do. I don’t normally suggest it because it can age you, but this client would obviously have perfect gray hair with no shades of yellow or dishwater. I have a few other strong natural gray customers who like color fun and mix in lowlights to add depth and spunk to their natural gray.
Side-Swept Bangs layered Bob

QA with> Salon Mariposa in Tigard Or How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it? This is a bob lined in the jaw length with long bangs side-swept. To brighten and blend, I kept a lighter color around the eyes. My favorite thing about this look is that it’s fun, sassy, but styling is simple. What items would you suggest for this look to be preserved and recreated? What kind of customer do you suggest this look for? This cut and design is ideal for someone without a lot of work who needs texture and a fun look. It is suitable for straight to medium wave fine to medium hair texture. Oval heart-shaped square faces are going to wear this look well.
Short layers of feathered
It works fine with normal hair for this a-line bob. T applies straight with wavy hair as well. This cut can be dry air with a touch of hydrating material to avoid frizz, or for a polished look it can be blown out. It is recommended that longer faces go a little shorter than those with maximum rounder faces.
Layers
High Stacked Bob How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it? This is a side-swept, layered bob. It has a high stack in the back and is stacked to give it more flexibility inside. Overall, I really enjoy cutting bobs, but the lady I cut on is my favorite thing about this look. She is an amazing person and willing to try different things at all times. What products do you recommend for this look to be maintained and recreated? I recommend Full Form Mousse bumble and bumble to help make your hair feel more full and give it extra texture. I finished with Oribe Dry Texture Spray to help the hair get more grit and grip. What kind of customer do you suggest this look for?
High Volume Lob With Layering
QA with> Mint Salon Spa in Cookeville Tn This design is perfect for anyone who wants a large look. A layered lob (long bob) will make the hair look fuller and thinner. I love this look as it helps to add the body to the hair instantly. For older women, it’s a great cut. What items would you suggest for this look to be preserved and recreated? Davines services are always my go-to when styling hair. I used a medium-sized circular brush to dry my hair on this user. Then I used the Melu Hair Shield as a heat shield and the Shi flat iron was used to turn the ends underneath. Next I teased the segment of the crown and misted the hair with a hairspray of medium lock. I finished with a shimmering mist to top it off for that extra shine! What kind of customer do you suggest this look for? For those with thin hair or lifeless hair, I recommend this haircut / style. This creates the illusion that your hair is thinner than it really is. But for someone who wants to pull their hair back, I wouldn’t suggest it. There are no choices with this cut an updo ponytail bun etc. Sleek Youthful Angled Bob
QA with Toms River Nj Salon Solutions How would you characterize this look and what’s your favorite?
QA with> Haircare By Jenn in Encinitas Ca How are you going to describe this look and what’s your favorite? I’d describe this look as a slightly angled bob with round layers overdirected and a wispy fringe. My favorite part is that styling is very simple. Next add the Tonic spray of Bumble and bumble for moisture all over. Next apply the Thickening Mousse bumble and bumble from roots to ends for the texture and hold of the weight. Now add the Invisible Oil from mid shaft to ends of Bumble and bumble. This oil can be used on wet hair as a heat-protective and can also be used to seal the cuticula by adding extra shine on dry hair. To give this look the stay it deserves, finish with Bumble and Bumble’s Classic Hairspray. What kind of customer do you suggest this look for? I recommend this look to the client who wants to make their hair more volume and movement. It is the perfect haircut for on – the-go busy women and those who are professional business classics. I would recommend that you use a 1-inch (or smaller) round brush to bend the ends. Or if it’s easier to put your hair at home in curlers. As for the fringe, the consumer will wear it three ways: by curling the top section of the fringe up and the bottom half of the fringe down to the side straight down or taking it back to the 90s (as we did here). With this cut you can’t really go wrong!
QA with Arnold Md’s Ae Hair Color Studio How would you characterize this look and what’s your favorite about it? This is an elegant, feminine, graduated layered bob. On a woman of any age it would look great because it’s very classic. The graduated layers optimize motion and size without fear. For a superior blow dry slip, I recommend using a root volumizing mousse and blow dry serum. Eimi Root Shoot and Eimi Perfect Me Lightweight Beauty Balm are my favorite products. To build volume and separation between layers, I used a 35 mm MoroccanOil ceramic round comb. What kind of customer do you suggest this look for? This style is suitable for the texture of fine to medium hair. It’s great for anyone who doesn’t want to spend a ton of time on their hair but wants a tailored look illusion. It’s such a flexible feel!
Elegant chin-length side-part Bob

This chin-length bob is almost one length. This keeps the style heavy and dense, perfect for women over 50 with fine hair among short hairstyles!
Cut
Cool Wispy Fringe
Longer Bangs and Highlights
This bob is almost one size. It makes it the perfect cut for fine hair to hold most of its weight. The way it’s done prevents it from looking too heavy and the slight curve in front of the hair makes the overall look smoother. Shorter Blunt Cut
You would be less drab and more beautiful with a style hat! The cut gives the short bob a framework for the contemporary feel.
This bob’s curve and wispiness softens the face and makes it younger. This softens the head by getting the ends beveled in as it frames it. Because it is cut at a curve and textured soft and wispy, the short bangs offer the same effect.
Wispy Casual Long Bob

This fairly short hairstyle looks elegant and casual without any effort!
Shorter Bob
The bob is shorter on the front and longer on the back. It allows hair to fall back naturally, making it perfect for people who want to keep their hair away from their heads.
