Australian Court Orders Isps to Block Subtitle Piracy DomainsSubtitle piracy domains in Australia will receive a three-year block from local Isps Isps, which is expected to go one step further by monitoring the re-routing and blocking that one as well as Village Roadshow Entertainment, a company that has fiercely fought piracy recently The F The latter is the organization that initiated this legal effort against subtitle piracy sites calling for their blocking on the ground that the case was “no different” from other active site-blocking applications on the trial. The judge found that the situation was indeed different but sufficiently similar to issue the resulting decision. According to the decision Roadshow must pay $50 for each blocked domain as enforcement costs to Isps such as Vodafone Optus Vocus and Telstra while they will be allowed to block the specified domains within 15 business days. It is not anticipated that the Isps can simply block the domain names identified by the court, but also do whatever they can to limit local visitors access to them even through re-routing through other online sites. TechNadu: One of the things you’re doing at Digital Shadows is studying cyber threat actors to help clients understand the environment better. Where do the major threats come from? Harrison Van Riper: The risks are incredibly varied but I believe Business Email Compromise (Bec) is one of the biggest threats that companies face today. I wrote a blog in April summarizing the Fbi’s annual Internet Crimes Complaints Center (Ic3) and $1.2 billion of that alone was attributed to Bec from the $2.7 billion lost over 2018. This problem has been around for a number of years now, but when we begin to measure how much money companies are losing due to Bec alone, it really gets remarkable and forces you to reconsider your approach to specific processes and systems. We’ve concentrated too heavily on internal safeguards that add security to the network and security to the hardware, but we need to look at more external threats in general to gain full insight in our risks. Inside Bec attacks you have techniques such as spear phishing social engineering typosquatting domains things that don’t completely mitigate more conventional network security. Harrison Van Riper: These predictions have been pretty good for the most part! If you look at Gdpr, we’ve seen several high-profile and record-making penalties being imposed against firms disclosing employee data, which has certainly caused many more firms to notice. Classic ransomware has continued to decline throughout the year with many studies suggesting that although it is still being seen attacking in the wild it has not been seen quite as many instances. One that might be less apparent was the assumption that the “trade war” between Us and China would lead both parties to an rise in nation-state espionage. Given that the economic conflict between the two countries remains a major geopolitical flashpoint, I would expect further covert cyber espionage campaigns between the two nations to begin. One trend that we’ll probably keep seeing throughout the second half of the year is more targeted ransomware attacks. In my previous forecast I assessed that conventional attacks on ransomware will decrease that is, ransomware is distributed indiscriminately via phishing or spear-phishing emails depending on the volume of campaigns to be successful. As we have seen in the case of Norsk Hydro and various city governments around the Us ransomware is used more often for targeted attacks to disrupt specific procedures within an overall system which ideally leads to a higher success rate. So it’s hard to argue the argument as a tiny Florida city has paid more than $600,000 to attackers after the ransomware corrupted their networks. Divtionally, as the US presidential election approaches in 2020, I would expect attempts to start ramping up to cause some sort of disruption. Specifically, social media networks have been on high alert with several large swaths of accounts detected and blocked attributed to spreading disinformation. With the proliferation of “deep fakes” in the media over the past few months, it wouldn’t shock me if videos portraying political leaders or rivals for presidential candidates began to circulate on-line. TechNadu: I found that you possess a Bachelor in Criminal Justice Science. How has that degree benefited you so far in your career? Harrison Van Riper: My Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice was how I first encountered the world of cybercrime I took a Cybercrime class and it revealed how widespread online crime is in the modern era. My degree helped me incorporate the conventional methods used to research illegal activity from a viewpoint of law enforcement that translates well to the cybercriminal environment if you apply a technological layer to it. Just as real-world criminals have their own technically sophisticated Ttps to steal funds from online bank accounts or hack into networks, so have their tactics and procedures to rob a bank or break into a vehicle cybercriminals.
