If you’ve ever seen two dogs mating, you know it’s hard to avoid wondering why they get hooked. As it is something that does not happen to humans, it is common that the first reaction we have when we see it is to think that something has happened to them and that they need help or, in case it happens without having planned it, we ask ourselves how to take off two dogs when they cross paths, seeking to prevent the female from becoming pregnant. However, before acting you have to know that it is normal for them.In this oneHOWTO article we are going to clear up this doubt and comment on many more details about mating, which should be known for the good of our pets.
How is the canine reproductive system
To understand how the reproduction of dogs works and, thus, answer questions such as the one that arises, it is necessary to start by knowing what organs their reproductive system has.
How is the reproductive system of dogs
That of males consists of eight main parts, which can be divided into internal and external parts:
- Internal parts: the testes, the epididymis, the vas deferens, the prostate and the urethra.
- External parts: the scrotum, the foreskin and the penis.
How is the reproductive system of bitches
The female reproductive system can also be divided into eight main parts that make the whole process possible, from heat to copulation, pregnancy and childbirth.
- Internal parts: the ovaries, oviducts, uterine horn or horns of the uterus, uterus, vagina and vaginal vestibule.
- External parts: the vulva and the clitoris.
The following lines detail how the parts that intervene when the two dogs get stuck work, among other details.

How to separate two dogs by mating
If you have suddenly found that your dog or bitch is hooked with another when crossing, it is likely that, not having it planned, you are wondering how to separate two hooked dogs that are mating. You may also wonder because you think they need help because something has gone wrong and they can’t part.
The answer to this question is clear: Two dogs should NOT be detached when crossing, you never have to. There are several reasons why you don’t have to do anything and all of them are to protect your health, because trying to unhook them will only damage both, and we can even take a bite.
The way in which they remain hooked, which we explain in the next section, prevents them from separating, but if force is exerted, pulling them, the separation could occur with the consequences that it entails. Some of the main problems that occur in case of unhooking two dogs that cross are tears in the genitals, prolapse of the vagina and bleeding.
Why do dogs get stuck when mating?
If you separate two dogs that cross these can suffer great damage since, this fact, is part of their way of reproducing and, due to their anatomy, they remain embedded in each other. Specifically, when the male mounts and penetrates the female, then he dismounts but without removing the penis, being stuck and facing away, which is known as “turning and buttoning.” As it is something natural, they do not need our help and they themselves they’ll unhook when they’re done. In case of wanting them to separate because their reproduction was not sought, nothing should be done either, since we would harm them.
This happens because the male’s ejaculation occurs in phases and, after a certain time, nature developed this latching system to ensure that complete ejaculation occurs and pregnancy is possible. This hooking happens because there is an area of the penis, the penile bulb, which widens after penetration, fitting into the vaginal vestibule. Having to be in this position for several minutes leads the dogs to position themselves better, turning their backs, to be able to monitor their surroundings, since they are at a time when they are vulnerable.
How long does the mating of dogs last?
The first thing to keep in mind is that canine mating consists of various phases:
- Recognition and courtship.
- Ride.
- Penetration and twist.
- Buttoning and full ejaculation.
In addition, the part that can last the longest is that of ejaculation since they do it in stages. These are the phases of ejaculation and the time ranges that each of them usually takes:
- Urethral or presperm fraction: lasts between 20 and 50 seconds. It occurs at the beginning, during penetration, and in this whitish fluid, called seminal plasma or prostatic fluid, there are no sperm yet. It serves to prepare the passage for the sperm, being a very rich liquid in nutrients for them.
- Sperm fraction: lasts between 2 and 3 minutes. It is white in color, thicker than the previous fluid and does contain sperm. At this time a part of the penis swells and they get hooked.
- Prostate or postsperm fraction: lasts between 4 and 6 minutes. In this phase, there are already very few sperm, so the fluid is again whitish and not so thick. As soon as this fraction ends, the penile bulb relaxes, that is, the erection decreases and they detach themselves.
Regarding how long the mating of the dogs lasts, it should be noted that these are only the phases from the moment of penetration, but that as the process has more phases or stages, as mentioned before, it is longer, and may last between 20 minutes and up to a little over 1 hour.

How to prevent two dogs from mating
From unCOMO we recommend that if you do not want your pet to have offspring, you avoid encounters in times of heat. Likewise, we advise the neutering or spayingBoth males and females, for their well-being and health and, also, because in various countries it is illegal to breed dogs without special permits that certify as the official breeder of a breed.
If, for whatever reasons, you do not want to choose to spay or neuter your dog, it is necessary that you take into account some recommendations to prevent two dogs from mating:
- When your dog is in heat, especially in the receptive phase, avoid meeting males, take her out for a walk at times when it is difficult to meet other dogs.
- Never let your dog in heat loose on the street or in the field.
- Make sure your furry, male or female, does not have the facility to escape from the house, such as a trapdoor or fences that are easy to jump or climb.
- While the bitch is in the phase of bleeding and urine marking, wash your terrace and the entrance of your house very well and several times a day, so the smell of pheromones can be less strong and not attract as much to males.
- If you have two or more dogs of different sexes that are not neutered or sterilized, you will have to make sure that they are in well separated areas at home and that they cannot leave them on their own.
