Vaginal discharge consists of a colorless substance with a normally viscous texture, which is produced by the glands that are inside the vagina, specifically in the cervix. This transparent liquid has some very important functions in the health of women, among them, cleaning the interior of the vagina of impurities, controlling and maintaining good lubrication and preventing the appearance of infections within it.
The vaginal discharge as we have indicated is usually transparent, viscous and without any type of odor. However, it is a substance that is subject to our hormonal changes, so its characteristics can sometimes change. One of the most common changes that vaginal discharge can have is its texture, which can become quite watery and abundant, so it is very normal to ask yourself: “Why is my discharge very liquid?“. Keep reading this oneHOWTO article and discover the answer.
Very heavy watery discharge during menstruation
As we have advanced, the characteristics of vaginal discharge are usually subject to the hormonal changes a woman undergoes, so we should not be surprised if during our menstrual cycle this vaginal substance adopts a watery texture.
During menstruation, that is, the phase where we expel the unfertilized egg through the vagina, the production of hormones is altered. As a consequence, the mucous plug located in the cervix is softened so that the expulsion of menstrual flow is easier. Therefore, during this stage it is normal that our vaginal discharge can be more abundant and of a more liquid texture.

Clear liquid discharge during pregnancy
Have you had this type of discharge during pregnancy and are you worried that something might be wrong? Don’t worry as during this stage it is quite common for women to experience a very watery vaginal discharge.
During pregnancy, especially during the second trimester of pregnancy, it is quite normal for some women to have a fairly liquid discharge, with a whitish and odorless tone. This phenomenon is caused by the increased estrogen levels during pregnancy, which also causes the flow to be more abundant.
However, we must be careful if this type of secretion occurs after the 37th week of pregnancy, since, in this case, it can be caused by a premature rupture of the membrane or bag of waters. In this case, it is essential that you go to the specialist immediately since this phenomenon could cause an infection in the fetus.
Liquid flow like water with sex
Sex can also be among the causes for which vaginal discharge becomes liquid, especially during two phases: excitement and climax.
As we announced at the beginning of this article, vaginal discharge plays a very important role and is about producing a natural lubrication, which increases when a woman is aroused because of sex. Thanks to this abundant and watery flow, the woman will have a much more pleasant sexual intercourse.
On the other hand, we can also experience this very watery discharge during a sexual phenomenon that we know as female ejaculation. This happens when the woman reaches the climax, which activates the glands of the urethra that originate a very liquid substance that will be expelled through the vagina during orgasm.
Liquid flow like water from medications
Taking some medications can alter the texture of your vaginal discharge. This happens mostly in women who take birth control pills, since it is a hormonal treatment, so the alteration of these levels could be causing a vaginal discharge more liquid than normal.
In addition to a watery vaginal discharge, birth control pills can also cause other changes in your discharge, such as orange blood during menstruation, vaginal dryness, or even brown bleeding between periods.

Other causes of very heavy watery discharge
The causes that we have explained in the previous cases about why vaginal discharge can be very liquid are among those that we could consider as common or normal. However, if in addition to being watery, the vaginal secretions are not being transparent or have an unpleasant odor, it could be a symptom that you are suffering some kind of infection in the area of the vagina. Among the infections that cause fluid discharge along with other symptoms, we find:
- Genital herpes: It consists of an infection where a kind of blisters appear both on the vulva and in the perineal area. In this case, the vaginal discharge in addition to being watery is also characterized by being very scarce.
- Adnexitis: it is an inflammation caused by a bacterial infection such as chlamydia or gonorrhea. In this type of cases, the flow appears liquid, of a highly variable consistency and with a greenish hue due to suppuration in the area.
- Endometritis: It is a disorder that inflames the lining of the uterus and causes abdominal pain and the discharge of very liquid and brown vaginal discharge. It can happen both in the middle of the menstrual cycle and at the end of the period.
