The person was selling the Facebook devices which offered free Sky content. Set-top boxes allowed for piracy are often sold by individuals tricked into the idea of being able to make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. But it also puts them in legal trouble against the world’s biggest broadcasters and that’s what happened to Ryan Jackson of Rhayader Wales. Sky has sued the person which could result in a £ 48,000 fine in court. Following an investigation by the broadcaster and local standards under the 1988 Copyright Designs and Patents Act, Jackson admitted to four offences after a complaint was filed by Sky Tv. Three of the offenses involve “selling devices configured to circumvent technological measures, and one for financial gain infringement of copyright.” Jackson was selling pre-configured Amazon devices on Facebook that illegally offered access to Sky content. He had also been offering Iptv services subscriptions without licensing. On social media platform the “loaded” devices were being sold for £ 105. Sky’s report reports that Jackson made £ 18183 from sales of those products from January 2016 to August 2018. However, the broadcaster’s final report would have accounted for Sky’s potential profit if the services were legally sold which sets the number at £ 48384.
