CoinTicker is a legitimate app which allows users to track prices for cryptocurrency. Malwarebytes security researchers have found CoinTickerinstalling several backdoors on macOs systems. Initially CoinTicker was built to allow users to track cryptocurrency prices based on market value. It is currently unknown whether the app’s creators built the app for malicious purposes, or whether external sources corrupted it. Once the compromised CoinTicker software has been installed, it secretly installs two backdoors into macOs systems allowing attackers to remotely take control of a device. The trojan was first discovered by a forum member named 1vladimir of Malwarebyte. Following further investigation, it was discovered that the malicious device connects to a remote host upon execution and downloads a variety of python and shell scripts that download and install backdoors upon execution. The trojan installs custom versions of EggShell and EvilOsx backdoors from a publicly downloaded public repository of GitHub. The scripts initially install the EggShell backdoor and build a launch agent that will set up the program to trigger its backdoor whenever a user logs into a Mac computer. Using an obfuscated script the EvilOsx backdoor is created after the first backdoor is developed. Code obfuscation is a common trick developers use to let apps fly under the radar of several security checks on popular platforms that app stores have in place. Google recently made changes to its policies to prohibit the release of any software with obfuscated code on any of its platforms. Additional software marketplaces such as the App Store and Windows Store are likely to follow suit. The app’s developers have not yet commented on the issue, and no contact information is available which makes the app look suspicious either. It’s completely possible the software was built to spread the trojan. iOs Users Can Use the Bitmoji Keyboard Outside of Snapchat
