Mountbatten the baroness Nicholas and a boy who was working on the boat both died of their wounds. The majority barely escaped serious injuries. Historians have described the bombing as perhaps “the most disturbing of all the horrors visited on the UK by the IRA.” It marked the first deadly IRA strike against a royal family member. Charles later commented on the sadness he felt after Mountbatten’s death along with his father. “I couldn’t imagine how we’d cope with the pain of such a devastating loss,” he said in 2015. The funeral at Mountbatten was held on September 5, 1979.
