His father died of cancer when Lynch was merely a ten-year-old child. After the incident his mother helped the family. He earned a Masters in Business Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1968, after graduating from Boston College. He was the founding partner of the Lynch Foundation. He tied the knot with Carolyn Ann Hoff and remained with her until October 2015 when she died of leukemia. He became a permanent worker there after three years; and towards the later 1900s he had gone up to the level of research director of Fidelity. In 1977 Lynch became the director of the barely-known Magellan Trust. In his tenure there, he managed to take the fund from around $18 million to over $14 billion with over 1,000 individual positions in stocks. The Magellan Fund had the best return in a 20 year period as of 2003 compared with any other firm.
