Andrew Westacott, head of the organization of the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, has denied the possibility that the race ceases to be held in Melbourne to move on to Sydney. This idea was dropped by the Australian television channel Seven Network.
Westacott pointed out that this idea has come as a big surprise to him, as the organizers of the event are focused on moving forward with the race in Melbourne. “The Australian Grand Prix, as far as I know, is not going anywhere. We have a great relationship with Formula 1, with more than 25 years of trust, “he said.
The Australian Grand Prix was held between 1985 and 1995 in Adelaide, but then the Victorian government reached an agreement to move it to Melbourne. “We have a contract until 2025. Although we cannot relax, we want to maintain the event beyond that year”Westacott has said.
Melbourne is scheduled to host the race again in April 2022. The city ends almost three months of closure this Friday to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. In fact, the Australian immigration minister has indicated that athletes who are not fully vaccinated will not be able to enter the country, which has raised much controversy around the celebration of the Australian Open and of this race.
