Lionel Richie was born in Tuskegee Alabama in 1949, and grew up on the Tuskegee Institute campus. He was a professional tennis player and he attended the Tuskegee Institute where he received an economics degree. He also attended graduate school at Auburn University for a brief period. Richie we d his college sweetheart Brenda Harvey on October 18, 1975. In 1983 the pair adopted informally Nicole Camille Escovedo the two-year-old daughter of one of Lionel’s band members. We raised her as their daughter Nicole Richie, and legally adopted her at the age of nine. In 1986 she began a relationship with Diane Alexander while still married to Harvey Lionel. On 9 August 1993, Richie and Harvey split after almost 18 years of marriage. On 21 December 1995 Richie married Diane Alexander. They have Miles Brockman, a son, and Sofia, a daughter.
