The family moved from Belgium to Australia when they were two years old; they stayed for a while in Sydney before making Montmorency their permanent residence. To avoid confusion and the possibility of alienating their son the De Backers decided to enroll Wouter in school with the English version of his name that is Walter or Wally as he got to be known for most of his life. Wally’s high school education was in Parade College, at the same-sex school. While there blossomed his passion for music. He learnt to play musical instruments and formed a Downstairs band with three of his school friends. Even though the band split up after they graduated from high school, one of them still plays with him. What happened to Gotye is that after unleashing his talent genius to the world, he became famous. He entered university in 2001 the same year that he started to create music independently. Over four years, he’d made three EPs. The first EP was made in just 50 copies some of which he brought to the area’s radio stations. He wanted to change the spelling of the pet name which his parents gave him for the title of the first EP; Gaultier which he pronounced as Goyte. Goyte made sure he hounded them to play the songs after bringing the EPs to radio stations, and demanded reviews. He then wanted to combine all of them into one album and released it to the public in 2003. The EPs were not the only work in that era that he formed another band called The Basics with a singer and songwriter Kris Schroeder. Boardface was known nationally, and that gave De Backer the courage to make more material. He released another independent album Like Drawing Blood in 2006 which received critical acclaim from critics and won his first award. It was not until 2011 that he gained international fame with his release ofSomeone That I used to Know Which featured Kimbra’s vocal talents.
Gotye is the 2013 three-time Grammy Award nominee. He had been nominated for two MTV European Music Awards and three MTV Video Music Awards. He was nominated for the People’s Choice Award in 2013, and was nominated for the Teen Choice Awards three times. He has won awards such as APRA Music Awards ARIA and Billboard Music Awards.
