The film, directed by John G. Avildsen, tells the story of a small time-club boxer Rocky Balboa, who gets a shot at the heavyweight world championship. Weathers played the role of an undisputed boxing champion Apollo Creed who fights Balboa to defend his World Championship. The film has been a huge commercial success and has won three Oscars. Since starring in a number of other films including Semi-Tough (1977) and The Bermuda Depths (1978), in 1979 he took over his role as Apollo Creed in Rocky II.
