She bagged her first appearance in a national ad for McDonald’s in 2004 after a number of auditions. She also worked on advertising Bratz dolls and was the face of Trad Clothing. 
On 19 September 2004 she made her debut in the show Drake Josh on television for a small role. Two months later she played her first major role as the main character of the Samantha: An American Girl Holiday TV movie. In 2005 she appeared in two films on the big screen both being adaptations of famous books for children. She played the heroine Opal in Because of Winn-Dixie, and played the aggressive and rude bubblegum-chomping brat Violet Beauregarde in Tim Burton’s adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. She worked in the movie The Reaping with Hilary Swank the next year and starred in the lead in the movie Have Dreams Will Fly. She played a major role in the coming age film Bridge to Terabithia in 2007. She also lent her voice to the film’s soundtrack for the song Keep Your Mind Wide Open. The song was her first hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 2008 she appeared in several movies including Jumper ‘ Spy School and Sleepwalking. Critics lauded her performance in the last one although the film did not do well in the box office. In 2009 she appeared in the reboot of Race to Witch Mountain opposite Dwayne The Rock Johnson. She acted in the movie The Space Between the next year. In 2010 she was included in the biographical drama film Soul Surfer. She played Bethany Hamilton’s titular character, who kept surfing despite losing one arm in a shark attack. Her next big role was a prequel to the hit series Sex and the City on the TV series The Carrie Diaries. In the original series, she played the role of Carrie Bradshaw the character Sarah Jessica Parker played.
