How to plant garlic
Before knowing how to plant garlic, you should know that there are two ways to do it: with seeds or by directly planting some garlic cloves. However, the easiest and most common is to plant seedless garlic, that is, burying garlic cloves.
To plant a clove of garlic, the soil must be previously subscribed and removed. If it is very light, it is recommended to add a good compost or a layer of manure to optimize the harvest. You should choose a place with a lot of sun, as it is very beneficial for the plant, but it should not be exposed to excessive heat either.
Once you have the perfect place and soil, to plant young garlic in a pot or in the garden, you just have to follow these steps:
- Make grooves about 2.5 cm deep and a separation of 30 cm between them.
- Place the garlic cloves, one by one, in the grooves. They should have the narrowest part facing up, since that is where the plant will come out. Each garlic clove should be 15 cm from the closest garlic.
- Sprinkle soil over the garlic, covering the 2.5 cm of the furrow.
- Squeeze the soil lightly, so there are no pockets of air, without compacting the soil too much.
- Water with plenty of water so that the soil and the garlic cloves are moistened.
When to plant garlic
The growing season and how long it takes for a garlic plant to grow it depends on the weather. If you live in cold areas, you should plant the garlic at the end of winter, otherwise the garlic could freeze. If you live in a more temperate zone, you can plant it from the beginning of winter until it is about to end. For example, the cultivation of garlic in Spain can be done from November to January.
