A soulful groove Jones was performing on his piano on Rock and RollPhysical Graffiti ended up as “Trampled Under Feet.” But Zep’s songs could also have stranger origins. The band also included a few crushers on the acoustic-heavy Led Zeppelin III and one of them was “Out on the Tiles,” the last track on the first side. Although Page wrote the opening riff for the album, the rest of the track was influenced by a drinking song that Bonham would sing. All of that revolved around the protagonist (in this case Bonzo) carousing to the core of his heart. ‘ Out on the Tiles ‘ is a term for hitting the bars

Figure 1 Robert Plant John Bonham and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin Laurance Ratner / WireImage Talking about Zep’s third album in a 1993 Guitar World interview Page explained what it was like hanging out with his late drummer. “John used to do a lot of stuff like rap” he said. “He’d just get drunk and start singing stuff like what you hear at the beginning of’ The Ocean. ‘” Page said the guitar part he played behind the vocals of Robert Plant was based on the song as Bonham sang it originally. When Plant’s time to add lyrics came he dropped the boozing theme and substituted a story about a man and his wife. Plant paints a picture of “rolling a peaceful mile” with a lady instead of guzzling bitter pints when he wants to drive away the blues. The words don’t all end up any deeper than a drinking song.

The hard songs on ‘ Zeppelin III ‘

Michael Putland / Getty Images The first thing that comes to mind about Led Zeppelin III is probably the second acoustic side and the overall stylistic change from the first two albums of the group. But the hard songs Zep did feature on III can’t be ignored. After all the album starts one of the most overpowering tracks of the group with “Immigrant Song.” First comes “Friends” followed by the “Celebration Day” hit, one of the most rare releases by the band. But the “Since I’ve Been Loving You” slow electric blues hold the overlooked album running. “Out on the Tiles” will mark the end of both the first and the last of the album’s hard tracks. Along with Page’s strong rhythm, Jones ‘ snarling bass and Bonham’s all-out assault make it truly an unforgettable album.
