The Long Walk Home (1990)

Carter enters Civil Rights battle by choosing to walk miles to and from work in support of the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott. Her boss Miriam Thompson (Sissy Spacek) initially doesn’t understand her situation, but she drives Carter to and from work a couple of days a week to make sure she gets to work on time. Thompson generally supports the campaign as a whole and displays her solidarity by carpooling other black workers. She experiences support from the white community and her husband as Thompson’s sensitivity develops.

Despite the unequal conditions and threats of retribution, both women bravely decide to give a detailed account of their lives to a young white writer penning a Jim Crow South presentation. Emma Stone plays the writer who learns has been raised by a black maid who pushes her need to reform her city’s injustice. Spencer won an Oscar for her role as Best Supporting Actress.
The Butler (2013) Figure 5 Source: YouTube Based on a true story Forest Whitaker stars like Cecil Gaines who migrates to Washington D.C. from the deep south. And finds work as butler in the White House. He works there for 34 years and with varying viewpoints, he severs many presidential administrations. One of Gaine’s sons (David Oyelowo) becomes involved in the Civil Rights Movement and becomes estranged from his father for what he sees as a passive personality. His dedication to his work also creates tension between Oprah Winfrey as himself and his father.

David Oyelowo returns to the period piece Selma directed by Ava DuVernay for another Civil Rights infused film. Oyelowo stars as Martin Luther King Jr. as he leads the African American suffrage struggle. Despite violent opposition and President Lyndon Johnson’s administration’s reluctance to legalize black voting, King and his supporters pushed on an unprecedented non-violent march from Selma to Montgomery. Their efforts brought about the signing of President Johnson’s 1965 Voting Rights Act. Selma was critically acclaimed for his lead song Glory featuring John Legend and Common, and won both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Song from the motion picture soundtrack.
