AlienVault’s security researchers conducted two tests of the ScanBox system payload which was first seen during 2014 and 2015. Since May 2019 repairing fixes have been available but a few systems remain obsolete and vulnerable. Recently Zdnet reports revealed bugs plaguing the two Vpn products before system administrators get the chance to fix them. The persistent attacks started last week with Apt5 searching the internet for compromised Vpn servers running older and unpatched versions of the products Fortinet and Pulse Safe. Those servers are open to remote users who do not need to authenticate to access files. The attackers will snatch hard-coded keys from there, and perform a full penetration of the corporate network. The two Vpn vendors have honestly tried to alert their customers that they must upgrade their software again and again immediately. They released a security newsletter in May when the fix arrived and then leveraged the Black Hat presentation advertising to warn their customers to upgrade again, then circulated emails again to make their case for an emergency patch to be implemented. Pulse Secure has even placed pinned warning messages on their partner platforms and customer support websites for in-product warnings. Still, and as is always the case in cases such as this, most have been upgraded but some systems have not been patched. Hackers are targeting such insecure systems as they are usually servers in large corporations and generally valuable targets. The target is cyber-espionage in the case of Apt5 and whatever other valuable data they may get along the way. As we last advised, even those who applied the patch may take a few more steps to secure their servers by allowing full log audit and sending it to an outbound server enabling multifactor authentication as well as enabling authentication of client certificates.

The first incident happened on January 17 due to hacking of an admin’s Steam account. Due to technical problems, the newly released Mmorpg Atlas experienced a rocky launch and the developers again had their hands full last week with players accessing an admin account. A small group of players in a separate incident used a variety of hacks to interrupt gameplay for others. Some of those affected by the exploits received messages asking them to send to PewDiePie, or interrupted their gameplay in various ways. Atlas players first suffered from these hacks on January 17 when someone managed to hack the Steam account of one of the game’s admin. The “hacker” was able to break into the online server settings of the game, and inside the server spawned vehicles killed other players and ruined gameplay. Grapeshot Games the company behind Atlas apologised for the incident and rolled the servers back to an older state to compensate for any gameplay disturbances the players endured. Multiple players however discovered an exploit in the game disrupted gameplay yet again on January 20. The players in charge of the action have been banned from the game. An official statement from the Atlas team stated that “many accounts in this regard have been banned by ourselves and BattlEye, although the facts and our thorough logging suggest that this group has no clear links to any one organization, but instead targets streamers and large or well-known businesses. We will continue our investigation and take action on all accounts and companies involved when we fully hear of their involvement. “In the second incident, Atlas administrator accounts were not compromised and steps were taken to ensure similar incidents did not occur in the future. This is not the first time that the message about “subscribe to PewDiePie” is distributed by malicious methods.
