PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Sues Epic Games ‘ Fortnite For Copyright InfringementPlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is suing South Korea’s Epic Games ‘ Fortnite for copyright violations. The lawsuit was filed back in January, and Pubg appealed to the Central District Court in Seoul for an injunction. The game developers are going ahead with the copyright lawsuit to secure the company’s interests according to a Pubg spokesperson. At the Seoul Central District Court, the two biggest battle royale games will be put against each other over copyright infringement. The Battlegrounds of PlayerUnknown is suing the Fortnite of Epic Games in South Korea to secure its rights. The lawsuit was filed back in January 2018 when the Pubg developers asked in court for an injunction. Fortnite is guilty of copying Pubg, and infringes its intellectual properties, according to the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds squad. All games are common royal combat games where up to 100 players are playing for survival on a single map. Although there had been battle royal games before the gaming industry’s two behemoths came into place Pubg was the first game to popularize the genre. Fortnite’s battle royale mode came out months after Pubg and the free-to-play platform pushed the title of Epic Games to surpass Pubg in popularity terms. Figure 1 Fortnite Photo Courtesy This is not the first time that Fortnite has accused PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds of copying Pubg. Pubg Corporation publicly indicated that the company was planning a complaint against Fortnite. All Pubg and Fornite have already been embroiled in several cases against smaller developers who have copied the style of the battle royale. In their respective games in the Us the developers were also cracking down on cheaters. Smaller games such as “Knives Out” and “Survival Rules” that belong to the same genre have been sued by Pubg but this is the first time that the developers have locked horns together. Despite millions of players playing both PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite shutting one down the other, a monopoly in the battle royale genre would result until a rival comes along that can challenge the player base. Even if the court rules in favor of Pubg, then Fortnite is unlikely to be shut down. Epic Games is likely to keep the game alive, with improvements that will not infringe the copyrights of Pubg.
