Shaw was born in South Central Los Angeles California on 28 April 1966. Shaw and his family relocated to Oakland California in the early 1980s. He was a drummer in Oakland-based Fremont High School band.

He dropped off college and moved to Chicago in order to pursue a full-time music career. In 1967, along with Ron Asheton, he founded the Psychedelic Stooges Band as the brother of guitarist Scott Asheton on the drums and Dave Alexander as bassist.
