2 Thriving Gold Stocks in This Poor Environment Ben Kramer-Miller More Articles 26 July 2014 8/8.994 8/8.994 Source: Thinkstock With this in mind, I conclude that investors seeking exposure to the sector should find the lowest cost producers in the industry. These are businesses that can turn a profit in a bad market environment and yet still give exposure to gold bulls so that these stocks can outperform when the gold price increases as I assume it will. While there are many companies that are low-cost producers, in particular I have chosen two that are broad and diversified and I believe that gold investors should be integrated into their portfolios.
1. Randgold Resources (NASDAQ: GOLD)
A proactive approach has resulted in the success of the company. It is geographically focussed at first. Many gold businesses are actually going to buy properties anywhere in the world as long as they are cheap enough. But Randgold is based on Central and West Africa. This gives it a unique and intimate knowledge of this area that investors have generally avoided and thus management has unique access to cheap assets with which suspicious investors are willing to part. The business has also focused on high-grade low-cost assets which means it can turn a profit at lower gold prices. Having expected the peak in 2011 and positioned his business accordingly, CEO DR. Mark Bristow has been uncannily attuned to the gold market movements. The company is currently trading at $86/share which is very close to its $89/share 52 week peak. It is not cheap but then quality stocks are rarely cheap again. It trades at 28 times earnings, which means investors are optimistic of the future potential of the company to increase its revenue while keeping down costs. While I’d like to wait for a pullback this is a long-term portfolio worth buying. 8/8.995 8/8.995 Source: Thinkstock
Royal Gold is not a mining company but a royalty and streaming firm. Such companies make contracts with mining companies whereby the royalty company makes an upfront payment to the mining company in exchange for an agreed amount of gold production at an agreed price (sometimes $0.) The great thing about these companies is that they know what the costs are going to be and that makes it much easier to run the business than to run a mining company. Recently, Royal Gold has seen production start at Thompson Creek’s (TC) Mt. Milligan Project, which adds around 30 per cent to Royal Gold’s output, grow rapidly in size. The company is growing from other sources like the Rubicon Minerals (RBY) Phoenix Project that will start production next year. The stock is t cheap at $76/share, giving it a multiple earnings price of about 40 per share. But it is a stock worth buying on weakness, despite the quality of its attributable gold production and the durability of its properties. Disclosure: Royal Gold is long in Ben Kramer-Miller.

Emily Coyle More Articles January 30, 2014 fourth-quarter earnings Thursday morning announcing that its income increased 28 per cent to $64.2 million or 59 cents per share from $50.1 million or 47 cents per share a year earlier. Revenue also rose to $682.76 million from 35 per cent. Full-year results for the athletic business were similarly strong. Net revenue rose 27 percent to $2.33 billion in net revenue grew 26 percent to $162.3 million and earnings per share came back to $1.50 exceeding analyst estimates once again. Under the remarkable performance of Armour, investors who knew the company back when it was a $110,000 business in 1997 have continued to delight. Under Armour’s CEO, Kevin Plank has shown expertise in distinguishing the company and taking risks that have ultimately proved to pay off. Although the projected revenue of Under Armour for fiscal year 2013 ($2.2 billion) is still significantly lower than that of rival Nike (NYSE: NKE) ($25.3 billion), it is obvious that the company based in Baltimore Maryland is on the rise and more than a couple of rivals are noticing. One of the risky tactics that will soon come to fruition of Under Armour is a 10-year contract with Notre Dame that it recently won. According to The Motley Fool Adidas since the late 1990s has had a deal with the Fighting Irish but the arrangement is set to expire at the end of June. That’s when Under Armor takes the place of Nike cashing in on an offer which is estimated to be about $90 million. This figure is notable for Under Armor as its balance sheet indicates about $186.4 million in cash and short-term investments, compared with about $54.2 million in long-term debt. Under Armour, however, expects the investment to pay off in the long run thanks to the commercial from the college teams at Notre Dame. Under Armour’s willingness to take big risks, it reflects her desire to catch up slowly but surely to one of Nike’s biggest rivals. It is definitely difficult to target Nike given that the company is now one of the most famous brands in the world. However, the growth rate of Under Armour is much steeper than that of Nike and its 13th college collaboration is only expected to help its excitement and exposure to the brand. An Under Armour-Nike merger is not expected to take place anytime soon, particularly as Under Armor now has to focus on paying off its steep investment with Notre Dame, but analysts are still open to the idea that the distance between themselves and Nike could potentially be narrowed down the road Under Armour. Due to the impressive growth rate of Under Armour and committed leadership investors are now recognizing this rapidly expanding business and maybe Adidas will be too. More from Wall St. Cheat Sheet:

Scandals are costly too. A Redbook article linked Duggar to the Ashley Madison platform reporting that he had paid almost $1000 for two monthly service subscriptions.
