He was born as one of five children to John and Theresa Vai on 6 June 1960 in Carle Place New York. He loved music from a young age, and when he was barely six, he began playing the organ. He was playing the accordion too by the time he was eight. When he was 13, he took the guitar. He was determined to play the instrument like Jimmy Page and so began to take lessons from the well-known guitarist Joe Satriani. He made a transcription of The Black Page of Frank Zappa and sent it to him along with a copy of his playing of the guitar. The talented young man fascinated Zappa, who recruited him in 1979 to transcribe his guitar solos. Also on Zappa’s album You Are What You Were, Vai did overdubs on many guitar parts.
