Roy was born on 15 April 1933 in Meherrin Virginia and is of American nationality but his race is not known. At birth the singer was given the name Roy Linwood Clark. He comes from a large family consisting of five children born to Lillian Clark (mom) and Hester Clark (father). In 1950 he had a band of his own and added trombone fiddle piano trumpet and drums to his played instrument list. He also worked up a comedy act he performed during the breaks of the show, and found that he loved making people laugh. He first played lead guitar for Jimmy Dean’s Texas Wildcats in the mid-1950s then for the Marvin Rainwater Ensemble. A guest dating from 1956. He co-hosted a weekday country variety show for NBC called Swingin Country together with Buck Owens in the mid 60s, which was cancelled after two seasons. In 1969 Hee Haw hosts were Clark and Buck Owens. CBS Television dropped the show in 1971, but continued to run in syndication for a further twenty-one years.
