EarthVPN – TechNadu’s Hands-On Review

Just as we do in every VPN review we’re going to put EarthVPN through a series of tests and tests. If you want to find out more about this phase, check out our article on how we analyze VPNs.

“2/2.056.jpg” EarthVPN looks like a reliable VPN whose reputation was broken back in 2014. However, we believe there is no reason to worry, although you should be careful (just like any other VPN). Our Rating: 7/10. First let’s see where EarthVPN comes from, and what it means for its users. We will be checking which jurisdiction this VPN operates under and whether any previous leaks have occurred.

EarthVPN comes from a company named European Union member. If you live in one of the EU countries you have probably heard about the set of laws in the GDPR. Well Cyprus decided in July 2018 to implement the GDPR Office of the Personal Data Protection Commissioner. Even though Cyprus does have a turbulent past, this is not something that EarthVPN should view as a negative point. This is a highly stable and prosperous country whose business-friendly laws have attracted many companies from all over the world.

In 2014, some media coverage from the Netherlands indicted that EarthVPN had registered its users ‘ IP addresses. More specifically an individual was arrested for threatening bomb attacks which turned out to be a user of EarthVPN. It was discovered after a court order that this VPN was using a data center which kept some IP transfer logs. These were used to identify the person in question. Does this mean EarthVPN can see whatever you’re doing online? Well not entirely. The case we mentioned in the preceding paragraph seems a strange set of coincidences. EarthVPN has since abandoned that particular data center and announced they are using additional methods to ensure no logs are kept. So you should be careful when using EarthVPN? Yes you ought to. However, we’re sure EarthVPN is doing a much better job of avoiding data logging now as another scandal would definitely shut down this VPN business.

Supported Platforms Devices “2/2.057.jpg” EarthVPN is compatible with many platforms but only Windows and macOS are available for native apps. There are no official Android and iOS apps there. Our Rating: 5/10. Now let’s see what kinds of platforms supporting this VPN. After all, you’ll want a VPN with a nice range of easy-to-install and-use native applications. Desktop Platform CompatibilitySome Appliances N / A. So EarthVPN is compatible with plenty of currently popular devices and platforms. It is however important to say that you will only find native apps created by this VPN on Windows and macOS. There are no official Android and iOS apps which means you will need to manually configure EarthVPN. Let’s not forget that this VPN can be installed and used on a variety of routers. That may be the best way to secure your entire household at once. And installing the VPN on your router counts in your subscriptions as a single device, so that you have two additional slots for your mobile devices.

“2/2.058.jpg” It’s easy to start with EarthVPN on desktop platforms, since there’s a native application. Be prepared however for a tedious process of manually configuring the VPN on mobile devices. Our Rating: 6/10. Signing up for EarthVPN is the first step towards using this VPN. Each process requires you to enter your email username password and then fill in your payment information to order a VPN subscription plan. Once you have done that you will need your credentials to start using EarthVPN. There are two options to get going – where you can choose to manually configure the VPN, or you can download the native software (which is the easiest way we suggest to do). Therefore download the Windows or macOS version from the website of EarthVPN. This program was reviewed on Windows where we ended up with a ZIP file. Surprisingly all you need to do is unzip this file, since there is no conventional installation process. Open the admin privileges file, and use EarthVPN.

Prominent features

“2/2.059.jpg” This VPN features a set of basic features which advanced users don’t want. Our Rating: 5/10. VPN Settings Checklist DNS Leak Protection YES IPv6 Leak Protection NO YES Ad-Blocker Anti-Malware NO Random Client Switches YES Database Count

“2/2.060.jpg” But we agree that this range would please average home users. Keep in mind that you can easily find VPNs with many more servers around the world. Our Rating: 5/10. So how many EarthVPN servers do they offer? Where are they in, and how many countries are they in? We are going to answer those questions, and then a couple more. Number of Servers 190 + Number of Locations 190 + Number of Countries Local Cities Availability YES Easy Switching YES We’ve tested dozens and dozens of VPNs so far – and we must admit EarthVPN comes with a relatively small network of servers. Generally speaking, average home users will be happy with the 190 + servers of this VPN, especially as they are spread across 54 countries. It is worth noting however that you can also find VPNs optimized for all kinds of online activities with incredibly large server networks.

Ease of Use

“2/2.061.jpg” EarthVPN is an incredibly simple application that makes no fine tuning possible. If something easy is required this VPN is for you. However, if you want your Web connection to be fully controlled you should look elsewhere. Our Rating: 6/10. Then you can select country and location of a port protocol. All of these are drop-down menus that let you simply select an object. This means you can not search for a particular server or make a list of your favourites. As you see this program provides plenty of manual labor. And finally you’ll find a few options at the bottom that allow you to enable the VPN’s kill-switch to initialize troubleshooting or auto-reconnect if for some reason a secure connection fails. You can notice EarthVPN offers no fine-tuning settings. Once the application is opened you will see everything it provides. There are no additional menus or windows so what you are going to see is what you will get. With this said EarthVPN again seems like a good solution for new users looking to fully automate their VPN.

Media streaming support to torrent

NO BBC iPlayer YES Amazon Prime Video NO YES We can see that some of the popular streaming services can be unblocked by EarthVPN. Surprisingly one such is Netflix. We managed to unblock this streaming platform with no problems and also without buffering. The situation with BBC iPlayer was not the same as we’ve experienced some fluctuations in the performance of this VPN. And sadly we weren’t able to unblock Hulu and Prime Video. It should be noted that EarthVPN supports P2P traffic, too. While this VPN comes with a history or exposing one user, you might want to stick to legal torrents just to be on the safe side of the law.

Security Privacy “2/2.063.jpg” Although it comes with capable encryption and powerful VPN protocols we can’t say EarthVPN is one of the most trusted VPNs out there. It collects IP addresses, and was found to share one of its users ‘ personal details. Our Score: Score 4/10. And this is the big question-can EarthVPN keep you online safe? What kinds of protocols is it using? Well let’s respond to those questions.

Supported encryption protocols You will get a different version of encryption depending on the type of VPN protocol you select. PPTP uses 128-bit MPPE cipher whereas L2TP uses a 256-bit key. SSTP then uses the 2048-bit SSL / TLS authentication certificate, and the 256-bit SSL encryption key. We recommend using OpenVPN in the event you want the highest level of security this VPN offers. You can utilize up to 256-bit AES encryption using this protocol. In theory, even if somebody gets to your encrypted data-they can’t read it.

Logging

This is usually not the best privacy policy we’ve ever seen. It’s troublesome that this VPN gathers IP addresses – although we don’t know if they can be connected to any other PII data form. Remember that this VPN was caught some years ago providing one of its subscribers with personal data. With this said we can not recommend it to those seeking the best online privacy possible.

DNS Leak Test

“2/2.064.jpg” “2/2.066.jpg” Figure 1 We did a speed test of our ‘ barren ‘ Web connection first. This means that without having this VPN enabled we have checked the speed of our web connection. We managed to get 66.35 Mbps for downloads during this round, and 18.84 Mbps for uploads. “2/2.067.jpg” Figure 2 A nearby EarthVPN Server performance. “2/2.068.jpg” Figure 3 Remote EarthVPN server performance; And finally, we wanted to check a remote server’s performance too. In our situation in the USA this would be a computer. We got 2.89 Mbps for downloads this time around, and 16.83 Mbps for uploads. Let’s place all of those numbers in a table now. Download Speed Upload Speed Baseline Data 66.35 Mbps 18.84 Mbps 0% Nearby Server 15.01 Mbps 51% Remote Server 2.89 Mbps 16.83 Mbps On average this VPN slowed us down by 77%. This is not the worst result we have seen so far. It’s obvious however that you should be able to easily find better-performing VPNs.
