Apps aren t the future of TV great content is
Arthur Greenwald notes for Re / code that when Apple previewed the new Apple TV chief executive Tim Cook said We agree that the future of TV is apps. He states that the most popular content on leading platforms comes most often from traditional television networks. “All the major networks have agreements with some mix of Netflix Amazon and Hulu. Netflix and most other video apps display a wide range of icons that people remember from traditional television as the most familiar ones. Shows on TV networks have a big advantage over the original series created by streaming services, as networks have time and space to advertise their program. Local affiliates of major networks provide another significant advertising venue, and Greenwald states that it is no mistake that Apple TV apps were withheld by major broadcast networks until they could confidently provide live streaming from their local affiliates.
Users will have to settle for the next best thing: Universal search
Well integrated universal search will allow you to quickly locate what you’re searching for through all the apps and platforms available to you. It doesn’t solve the question of figuring out what you want to watch, of course, but it makes it easier for you to find either specific shows or movies or even content with a specific cast or crew member on a particular topic. Pierce notes that some substantial progress has been made on this front and he characterizes Roku’s search functionality as excellent Amazon’s as enhancing and Apple TV’s universal search through Siri is good enough to be a core feature of the new TV. “But to succeed universal search must be universal indeed. There’s only one place to get all the movies and shows you want and you can t watch what you want without signing up for at least a couple of accounts and subscriptions. But the future TV will provide you with all that content effortlessly and with such a clear interface and viewing quality that it doesn’t matter where a show or movie is hosted. Yet Pierce points out that this kind of universal search will treat it the same and the businesses that own the content will do their utmost to prevent their products from being unbundled in this way.
