Steven Spielberg made his first film at age 12. It was about a train wreck that included his TimeLionel train set. He would continue making amateur movies in his teen years until he became a Boy Scout in 1958 and after making a nine-minute 8 mm film, which he titled The Last Gunfight, he received the photograph merit badge. Steven Spielberg wrote and directed Firelight at the age of seventeen in 1963, a 140-minute science fiction adventure which became his very first independent film and which would also inspire the film Close Encounters later on. The budget for the film was $500, most of which came from his father who showed up for one night in a local movie making up his production cost that night. Steven Spielberg is also considered to direct some of the most successful films in Hollywood’s history and his films consistently rank among the best ever made.
