Maureen O’Sullivan was born on May 17, 1911 in the town of Boyle, in County Roscommon, Ireland.
It can be said that Maureen’s career started completely by chance, since in 1930, director Frank Borzage, who was filming a musical in Ireland, met her and gave her a test. The result was so favorable that he invited her to go to Hollywood, already with a contract with Fox.
He participated in some films, without much success, until in 1932 he started working for Metro Doldwyn Mayer. Here he would begin his rise to fame, since this same year he was offered to participate in the movie Tarzan of the apes, with Johnny Weissmüller, playing the role of Jane, Tarzan’s companion. The film was a resounding success, so much so that it spawned a series of sequels, five more in total, in which he reprized the same role.
From here on, the actress’s career was already consolidated, and she began to participate in a large number of films, many of which are already part of the history of cinema, such as “Strange interlude“,” Dinner for the accused “, Ana Karenina,” David Copperfield “or” A day at the races “, feature film in which he worked with the Marx Brothers.
In 1942 he retired due to family problems, returning in 1948, when he shot the film “The killer clock” with Charles Laughton, although from then on he devoted himself more to theater and television than to the big screen. She married filmmaker John Farrow, being the mother of well-known actress Mia Farrow.
Maureen O’Sullivan died on June 23, 1998, victim of a heart attack.
