Maila Nurmi – Biography of Maila Nurmi

Actress Mala Nurmi was born in Finland on December 11, 1922.

When Maila was just a baby, her family moved to the United States, specifically to the city of Ashtabula, in the state of Ohio, along with a community of Finns who lived there.

After completing her studies, Maila moved to the city of Los Angeles, where she wanted to work as a model.

Maila knew Man Ray and Alberto Vargas at that time, with whom she did several photography sessions.

Thanks to these sessions, Maila gets, in 1947, a small role in the movie “If winter comes”, where she plays a small role.

In 1953, Maila attends a costume party in the company of her good friend Lester Horton. The actress chose for this occasion a model taken from a “Charles Addams” comic, wearing a tight black dress and with makeup on her face that made her look like she was dead.

This outfit attracted the attention of an attendee at this party, Hunt Stromberg Jr., who was a television producer, offering him a contract to get out of that guise on a small screen show. In it he presented horror films and was on the air for more than a year, then going to another chain of the competition with the same character.

On January 20, 1955, the actress was kidnapped by a mentally disturbed person in her apartment, holding her for several hours. Finally, he was able to escape and ask the police for help.

Later, the actress began to star in various films, such as “Too much, too soon” or “The big operator”, where her characters are short-lived.

The director Ed Wood, hired her to star in the movie “Plan 9 from outer space”, where she played a vampire who was resurrected.

In the 1960s, the actress appeared in several films alongside actors and actresses such as Mamie Van Doren or Mijanou Bardot, Bridgitte Bardot’s sister.

The actress also had among her friends Orson Welles and James Dean, with whom she had a good friendship.

As for his personal life, he married twice, the last in 1961, to Fabrizio Mioni.

Maila not only worked as an actress and presenter for a living, but also worked as a flooring installer, making curtains or carpentry objects and painting them.

Soon after, Maila set up an antique boutique on the same avenue as Melrose Place.

The actress continued working on some films, but already in a very specific way, such as “Dry”, in 1996 or “No way in”, in 2000.

Maila died on January 10, 2008
