The current queen has been the head of state of Britain long enough for a good number of people to either know or not have been around long enough to witness anyone else on the throne other than her. And we thought we were looking at how long the reign of Queen Elizabeth has been, and who falls behind her as the second longest serving monarch of the United Kingdom. Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne on February 6, 1952, when her father King George VI died, and has been in power since. The then-25-year-old and her husband Prince Philip were in Kenya at the time of her dad’s death. Though King George VI died in 1952, Elizabeth II was not crowned until June 2nd, 1953, the next year. The explanation for this is because of the custom of having a fair length of time between passing a monarch and holding a celebration for the coronation of their successor. In 2015, the queen became the longest serving monarch of the United Kingdom and in 2016, after the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, she became the longest-ruling monarch in the world. Her eldest son, Prince Charles, is the longest serving heir visible in the history of the British royal family.

Queen Elizabeth II surpassed her great-grandmother Queen Victoria for the longest reign. She was the queen of the United Kingdom from June 1837 to January 1901, for a total of 63 years and 216 days. When she was only 18, Victoria inherited the throne, and also held the title of Empress of India that she adopted in 1876. In 1840, the late queen married her first cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and was the first monarch to live in Palace Buckingham. However, she passed away at Osborne House’s former royal residence, which was used as her and the summer home and rural retreat for Prince Albert. One of the things we recall about Victoria was her efforts to improve relations between England and France. Her grandfather King George III had the third longest reign after Victoria which lasted 59 years and 96 days. Many kings and queens with impressive reigns

Although Queen Elizabeth II Queen Victoria and King George III had the longest reigns there are many other monarchs who have also spent many decades on the throne. Those other kings and queens are King James IV of Scotland who ruled for 57 years and 246 days; King Henry III of England and Lord of Ireland who ruled for 56 years and 29 days; King Edward III of England and Lord of Ireland who sat on the throne for 50 years and 147 days; King William I of Scotland ruled for 48 years and 360 days; Queen Llywelyn of Gwynedd ruled for 44 to 46 years; and How Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip Say Goodbye to Every Other The Cheat Sheet on Facebook!Source: https:/www.flickr.com/photos /
