First and foremost the day is an opportunity for everyone to pause and remember those who have dedicated their lives to serving their country. It also marks the unofficial start of summer as the long weekend begins and many take advantage of unwinding with friends heading to the beach and basking in the sunshine otherwise. With the sun high up in the sky no matter how you are celebrating or where you need a refreshing drink this weekend to battle the heat and quench your thirst. Thinkstock 1. Tom Collins Since this date is the unofficial kick-off to the summer season you want a quintessential summer drink “Tom Collins” to start on the right foot. Esquire states that, in the late 1800s, the Tom Collins first appeared. Skip the cocktail mix and blend your gin with sugar lemon juice and club soda for the more traditional route. Ingredients: 2 ounces of London dry gin 1 tablespoon of superfine sugar 1?2 ounce of lemon juice Combine the ingredients in a Collins glass 3?4 full of ice cream. Heat 4 cups of water with sugar and lemon peel in 4-quarter saucepan to boil over high heat stirring occasionally. Cover the casserole and cook for 3 minutes. Remove the fire from saucepan. In the meantime, it pulses berries in the food processor until purée. Pour into a medium-mesh sieve set over a large bowl and press the mixture of berry with spoon back to remove seeds; discard seed. Easy syrup can be kept in the fridge for several weeks in an airtight container. 3?4 cup 100% Agave Tequila 1 medium peeled and sliced 6 ounces lime juice 2 ounces Triple Sec 2 ounces simple syrup Directions: make a simple syrup by mixing sugar and water over heat as in the previous recipe. Half the sliced cucumbers muddle in a pint glass with the tequila. Let it sit for an hour in refrigerator. Strain the tequila cucumber and mix into a pitcher with all the ingredients. The drink has Bermudic origins but don’t let the non-patriotic name keep you from sipping it on the weekend of Memorial Day. A Dark and Stormy is great for drinking warm weather, and Chow’s recipe will have you made for friends and family batch after batch. If you choose blackberry or strawberry garnish, you’ll also have a chaser on hand. Ingredients: 1 part peach schnapps 1 part blue curacao Blackberry strawberry (optional) Guidelines: fill the bottom third with grenadine in a shot glass.
