Irureta – Biography of Irureta

On April 1, 1948, the soccer player Javier Irureta was born in Irún, in Spain. His demarcation was that of a forward, although he combined this position with that of a midfielder.

Irureta’s career began at the Real Unión Club de Irún, in 1965, where he would spend two seasons, excelling in his role as a scorer.

In 1967, Atlético de Madrid noticed him and decided to sign him.

With the Madrid club, he stands out again, not only in the Spanish League, but also internationally, beginning to be well known.

The Spanish soccer team decides that he should wear the red shirt, which he does six times.

In 1975, the Athletic de Bilbao club signed him, being in the same 5 seasons, playing 344 games and scoring 70 goals.

In 1980, Irureta retired as a player, beginning to coach various soccer teams, including Deportivo de La Coruña, Athletic Club, Real Oviedo, Real Betis Balompié and Real Zaragoza.

Currently, Irureta is the coach of the Euskadi team, a position he has held since 2011.
