Charity Wright IntSights Cyber Manipulation CampaignsByGabriela Vatu-September 30, 2019.1162 Discussing the many aspects in which some governments around the world are running cyber manipulation campaigns Charity Wright, a current threat researcher with IntSights and former Nsa Chinese spy specialist, touches on some key issues. In an interview with TechNadu, Wright goes into more detail, trying to help us see the world in which we live better. TechNadu: We know that Russia was quite involved in its campaign of disinformation around the Us elections of 2016. Have they changed tactics now that they are more concerned about Facebook Twitter and other tech companies? Charity Wright: Yes it did. After Twitter and Facebook began shutting down their pages they moved over to Instagram and started sending messages to the target audience using memes / images. These included politically charged and politically divisive memes and messages on sensitive topics like black life matters for the presidential candidates of political parties and taking a knee during the national anthem. Not only from Ira, but also from other Russian cyber threat groups, we have observed that they are good at pivoting to new platforms and avenues to be successful. TechNadu: While Russia is interfering and trying to change the outcome of the election, either to create chaos move their agendas or to the the legitimacy of a nation it has a different purpose, much as it has happened with the U.S .- China. We can see what they and others are doing on Facebook Twitter Instagram but what do we know about their in-house social media tactics? Charity Wright: We know China isn’t as good as Russia when it comes to faking English-speaking social media posts, particularly when they’re in a rush or under pressure. In different geographic areas they use various social media channels. For example, they use popular Chinese social media platforms to send a different message to people in China and a different set of Western platforms and languages to a Western audience. Charity Wright: No. TechNadu: Most governments around the world are trying to manipulate, as well as official statements, through social media and media channels. What are some of the promotions you’ve been catching your eye in the last few years? Charity Wright: Bangladesh Venezuela Iraq Syria, etc. Several governments have taken notes on Russia’s playbook and used the same social media strategies particularly during election seasons to influence people. TechNadu: We see groups everywhere in the world that are vulnerable to believing in those manipulations and groups that easily point out the facts. Is manipulations more effective based on the political affiliations of people, in the sense that they are more likely to believe in the parties for which they also vote? Charity Wright: How genuine the posts seem is the key factor that makes some of those campaigns successful. The readers are more likely to believe a post that uses the same authentic language they use uses similar cultural norms and uses subtle cultural innuendos that would only be understood by people at that place. Charity Wright: It is understood that state-sponsored threat groups are particularly dangerous due to the amount of funding they obtain. The more money the party has to develop new attack strategies the more strength they have. It is well known that state-sponsored military-grade operations are extremely effective in targeted operations. Cybercrime organisations can be equally dangerous because their primary aim is financial gain. We run efficiently and safely as we put all of their money into creating an underground criminal enterprise. The more wealthy they are, the more vulnerable they become. The same is true of state-sponsored Apt’s. The more secrets they find, and the more they are equipped to take their enemy out the more successful they are. Technadu: Everywhere in the world, including the Us, attempts to censor occur. By enforcing cybersec laws on governments to help push their views silence opposing ideas and destroy encryption. Does Vpns provide a good solution to combat this? And the dark web? Charity Wright: Many governments have more power and control than others over their network networks. Those with full capacity for censorship and those who can openly track all encrypted communications inside their borders have greater control over how people access the Internet. In some nations, Vpns are banned and those who wish to bypass such laws create their own infrastructure to do so. There are severe consequences if they get captured. While Vpns and anonymizers may be a temporary solution there is no guarantee that Internet users will be safe from being tracked and censored by their respective governments. Now, when using a Fire Stick, you can navigate YouTube Tv with your remote as you do on regular cable. The feature works on Sony Tv but it seems it’s available on other smart TVs as well. The whole thing started with a Reddit user who found their Sony Tv remote allowing them to use the up and down buttons to access the channels on YouTube Tv just like you do on normal cable. This is something that was previously available with PlayStation Vue but it appears that YouTube Tv has now also taken on the feature. The Redditor also stated that it works with PlutoTv and that they have also tested and that YouTube Tv can be regulated on Fire Tv but not on Apple Tv with a remote. It seems you need to allow Hdmi-Cec to do this, which stands for Hdmi Consumer Electronics Control that makes your TV and devices pair better together. Basically, once a device is connected to your Tv via a Hdmi port, you can control it with your TV remote more easily. The problem with this functionality is it comes under different names depending on your Tv producer. For eg, Lg Tvs have it under SimpLink, while according to Lifewire, Panasonic calls it Viera Link Hdavi Control, or Ez-Sync. Here are some other names on various devices for Hdmi-Cec: Samsung: Anynet Anynet+ Sony: Bravia Sync Bravia Link Toshiba: Regza Link Ce-Link Vizio: Cec Other live Tv platforms also have this feature available for their users.
