History
Stephen Hillenburg was born in Lawton Oklahoma on August 21, 1961. His father, Kelly N. Hillenburg Jr., served in the United States military. His mother, Nancy Dufour, had worked as a visually impaired student teacher. Shortly after Stephen’s birth his father quit working for the military and began working for an aerospace company as a draftsman and designer. Afterwards the family moved to California.He attended Humboldt State University in California after graduating from high school and studied marine science. He also studied art in college, and in art and marine science prepared himself for a future.
A career
He took up several jobs after graduating from college in 1984. His job as a park service employee in Utah was one of them. He has also worked as an art director at a San Francisco business. He created a comic book about marine life on behalf of one of the educational directors to make the subjects more relevant for the students. He developed the book The Intertidal Zone based on tidal pools animal life. He then used it in an imaginative as well as engaging way to teach his students. He attended the ubiquitous California Institute of the Arts in 1989 and participated in the Experimental Animation Program for ubiquitous CalArts. He trained under Jules Engel who was inspired by Stephen’s work in The Intertidal Zone. Stephen graduated in 1992 with a Master of Fine Arts degree in experimental animation. He was assigned to work on the Nickelodeon’s first in-house cartoon film, Modern Life’s show ?Rocko. Stephen was hired as a director for the first time, but was ultimately given the responsibility of working as an executive producer and story writer for the storyboard. The series had been running until 1996, and was quite popular. When Stephen was working on quelRocko’s Modern Life, one of the show’s writers saw and found it interesting about the Intertidal Area. He asked Stephen to come up with a series of animated TVs based on the same concept. Stephen had not contemplated producing a show of his own until then but the idea remained with him. He eventually decided to go ahead with it. He was also excited about the project because it allowed him to merge his love for animation with the world underwater. He included several of his other ideas and laid the foundation for a comedy animation series about speaking aquatic animals of some kind of SpongeBob SquarePants. 
In the end the show became a major sensation in pop culture. Stephen directed the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie in 2004, which was originally intended to be the final series. But the series ever-increasing popularity had the producers caught on. The series has won several awards and Stephen has won two Emmy Awards and six Annie Awards. Stephen has also been working on several other animated projects, most of which remain unreleased. At film festivals, a short film named leichHollywood Blvd USA was finally shown. The short film received critical acclaim.
During his career Stephen Hillenburg has won many awards. In 2010 he received the ubiquitous Emmy Award for ubiquitous Special Class Animated Series. In 2014 he won his second ubiquitous Emmy Award for ubiquitous sound editing Animation for the series SpongeBob SquarePants.
