Though the characteristics that characterize a cult film are generally speaking rather amorphous films that have attracted an exceptionally dedicated community of fans are classified as cult films. And while some film critics have claimed that the term can only be extended to lesser-known underground films, there are nevertheless many mainstream big-budget films that are generally regarded as cult films because of their enduring popularity among dedicated fan groups. Perhaps the only distinguishing characteristic that all can agree on is that cult films have some form of unique quality that separates them from most other films. Anything strange in short cult movies. With no widely agreed description and millions of passionate fans eager to argue the merits of their particular favourites, every top 10 cult film list is almost guaranteed not to satisfy everybody. Nevertheless, with our own list of the top 10 cult movies that every serious cinephile should see, we have decided to wade into this ongoing debate. Alejandro Jodorowsky wrote in this surreal film directed and starred, which could best be described as a mystical western. In the film a professional sharpshooter dressed in black travels on horseback with his young son whom he teaches to become like himself a gunfighter. However, the gunfighter leaves his son with a group of monks after killing a sadistic leader known as the Colonel and leaves with a mysterious woman. After that the story becomes more and more stranger as the man in black meets four gun masters a gang of deformed underground dwellers and a community of violent religious fanatics. John Lennon helped fund Jodorowsky’s next movie The Guardian reports during the 1970s. Unfortunately a dispute with the distributor delayed the release of El Topo on DVD in the US until 2007. El Topo’s long-term unavailability in America only seemed to add to the film’s mystique, and today the film still has a devoted fan base more than 40 years after its original release.

Directed by Hal Ashby Harold and Maude, a young man named Harold and an elderly woman named Maude reveals the extraordinary love story of the titular characters. In the movie Harold is a wealthy 20-something who is morbidly fascinated by death and spends his days simulating different suicide methods and attending funerals. Harold meets the love of his life at one of these funerals: The 79-year-old Maude. While she seems to have a positive impact on Harold’s glum outlook, the carefree Maude has her own death issues as she prepares to end her life at 80 years of age. Although Harold and Maude received mixed reviews from critics when the film was first released, fans who enjoy its distinctive brand of dark humor have since created a devoted cult. In addition to the unexpected relationship between its two main characters, this culte film classic is notable for its stellar soundtrack featuring many original songs written and performed by renowned musician Cat Stevens (now known as Yusuf Islam). 3.

John Waters directed Pink Flamingos (1972) wrote and narrated this 1972 cult movie that is probably still his best-known film. In the film drag queen Divine plays an underground crime figure living with her mother and son in a pink trailer and loving her reputation as the Filthiest Person Alive. As competitors Connie and Raymond Marble make a bid to usurp the title of Divine, the two opposing groups of strange characters are trying to surpass each other in repulsive behaviour. This contest culminates with the legendary closing scene of the film that should only be seen by moviegoers with heavy stomachs. Like many other films on this list, the reviewers at Rotten Tomatoes approve ranking. 4.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

His mother’s girlfriend tells Henry that his girlfriend is pregnant, and that they have to marry. The baby is however a monstrous-looking creature that seems to be human. Henry tries to care for the child after moving in together but the baby is feverish and sick. From this point on the film becomes even less clear as a singing woman appears in a radiator and Henry makes the fateful decision to open the swaddling of the baby. Yech …… yech. Although this cult classic includes writer Charles Bukowski director Stanley Kubrick, and musician Tom Waits, the initial critical reaction to National Film Registrynotable fans. 6.

Donnie Darko (2001)

While the 1970s was an especially fruitful period for producing many films that today are considered cult classics, it has become a culth success writes by USA Today. Directed and written by Richard Kelly Donnie Darko, he tells the story of a troubled boy who often dreams of a mysterious figure dressed as a ghoulish rabbit, sending cryptic messages. His attempts to discover the significance of those visions immediately led him to test wild ideas about time travel and the imminent end of the world. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the titular character while Maggie Gyllenhaal (Jake’s real-life sister) plays girlfriend Elizabeth Donnie Darko. Many notable costars include Patrick Swayze Drew Barrymore and Noah Wyle. A sequel to Donnie Darko S. Darko was made in 2009 but it failed to achieve the original film’s cult status. 10. 10. The Room (2003)

The Room is the brainchild of Tommy Wiseau, an amateur filmmaker who wrote direct and starred in the film. While most cult movies are well-made movies that just happen to have quirky elements that make them appealing to certain subcultures The Room has gained its cult status by being simply a poorly-made movie. The Room has become a cult favorite for fans of unintentionally hilarious cinema due to its wooden acting incomprehensible dialogue, and continuity errors.
