Did you ever want to embrace your inner magical soul? I help my customers do this by blending the colors of the rainbow behind the chair. I emphasize the importance of good at-home care in addition to a quality coloring system. Dyed hair isn’t the easiest thing to take care of plus creative color, and more steps are needed in your routine for mermaid balayage. Check out this ultimate unicorn hair care guide!
Start Caring from Picking the Look
It is important to understand your end result. Looking for a longer duration of your color or would you like to change rainbow locks every month? You may want to go with more pigmented colors and let them fade instead of starting with pastels, depending on what the desired look is. I still recommend that you go a bit darker and enjoy the fade-out. For example, the color line with which I work (Pulp Riot) is designed to beautifully fade out. Ask your stylist what line of color he / she uses because they are not created in the same way. It’s always good for your stylist to bring pictures of inspiration. Make sure you understand each other, along with your stylist.
Wash Less (Find Your Perfect Dry Shampoo)
Wait for your first shampoo after the coloring process at least hours before the first time. So try cutting down to-times a week – the number of times you wash your hair. A lifesaver is a good dry shampoo. Amika is my personal favorite because it makes second-day hair voluminous and easy to> IGK Jet Lag and The Ouai dry shampoo foam.
Get Used to Cold Water
While shampooing use the coldest water your head can handle because it really helps to extend the period between color appointments.
Free Sulfate Hair-Care Shelf
Sulfates in hair care products tend to strip off essential oils and lose pigmentation. That’s why I think all unicorns in their shampoos and conditioners should be aware of the list of ingredients. It’s also great to follow the recommendations of your stylist, because she / he knows what works best for the color line that she used on you. Generally I recommend trying R+CO shampoo and conditioner from their vegan Gemstone Color or Redken Color Extend range for those with thicker curlier hair.
Less Heat More Heat Protection
While leaving hair dry and damaged, heat causes hair color to fade faster. Every energy from curling / straightening irons blowing from the sun to even showering with hot water will hurt your colored hair to a degree. This is why owning a good heat-protecting spray is so important. I recommend the use of multi-functional products such as a heat- and UV-protected moisturizing leave-in conditioner. Amika’s Vault is a great option.
Perfect Unicorn Hair Routine
The routine will start with a shampoo and conditioner and then use a damp hair leave-in. Going through heat protectors and moisturizers and finishing with your choice of vivid or textured sprays. If you feel lacking brightness or moisture throughout the day, take a drop of The Ouai Hair Oil and run through your ends.
Deep Conditioning Mask
You will need conditioning treatments as long as your hair is bleached and painted. You don’t want to do too many because the hair may start not feeling its best with too much protein. I recommend that you do your hair treatments when the color of the hair begins to fade so that you can prepare the hair for your next color service by moisturizing it. Amika’s Kure is a great treatment I enjoy personally.
DIY Toning
You can use a purple shampoo to avoid any unnecessary yellow pigments from showing as your rainbow hair fades back to its pre-lightened hue. I love the toning shampoo Pulp Riot Barcelona. This cancels the unwanted tones. You can leave this on for a couple of minutes and then start lathering and emulsifying so that the purple pigment does its job. Unicorn hair care may be a little tricky, but real unicorns should not be stopped! I recommend following a few imaginative color hair accounts (such as mine) to become a queen of vivids or pastels to be able to speak the language of your stylist and create a maximally effective hair-care routine.
