The manufacturer has already patched the vulnerabilities through firmware updates but many have not yet implemented them. As mentioned by TechCrunch researcher Gal Zror has discovered three remote code execution flaws that plague various models of wireless routers (“Unleashed” series) from ‘ Ruckus Networks. ‘ Although the manufacturer has already pushed through fixing updates several thousands of devices are still unpatched and therefore vulnerable to exploitation. Most precisely, the faults are in the software of the web user interface used by the Ruckus Unleashed routers, which can be abused without the password of the administrator. Gaining root privileges on the system would be the result of a successful attack of that kind. This means an intruder may obtain unauthorized access to the Ruckus router and then search the internal network that this router supports to hack deeper into it. It would also be perfectly possible to eavesdrop on data packets which come and go through the router. The three discovered Rce vulnerabilities are qualitatively different but one of them is very easy to exploit. The researcher says that in order to take advantage of the vulnerability, one would only need a single line of code and unfortunately he is already seeing this sort of targeted scans happen. Gal Zror presented his exploitation methods during the recent Chaos Communication Congress’ conference in Germany demonstrating the potential for authentication bypassing command injection path traversal arbitrary file reading and writing and stack overflow. As the security expert demonstrated the first Rce requires a specially crafted Ghidra script to be deployed, the second uses a vulnerability to stack overflow and the third is based on a technique for bug chaining. Ruckus replied to that story by clarifying that the 200.7.10.202.92 software update patched all three vulnerabilities. Since their routers are designed not to automatically get firmware updates, for safety reasons and better control management, users will have to do it manually. That said, if you use a Ruckus Unleashed app, make sure you upgrade their software to the latest version available. It, of course, applies to any router that you can use because undiscovered bugs can always lead to a conflict between networks and systems without any stories such as the above.
