Slick was born on 30 October 1939 to unmarried Ivan Wilford Wing and Virginia Wing. Throughout her childhood she also spent a lot of time learning to play the piano and the guitar with her younger brother. Grace Slick moved back to San Francisco where she married Jerry Slick after finishing her formal education. From 1961 to 1971, she married the cinematographer Jerry Slick. She developed a relationship with guitarist Paul Kantner while still married to Slick and had a daughter with him. Her second marriage was to the lighting designer Skip Johnson from 1976 until 1994. She has a chronic alcoholism and smoking epidemic. She was so addicted to alcohol that she sometimes had to cancel her performances, and she also has the questionable history of abussing people under the influence.
In 1965-66 she founded, together with her husband brother-in-law and some friends, a music group called The Great Society. The band grew into a successful psychedelic group in the Bay Area. In 1966, Jefferson Airplane band asked her to join them as a singer she was obliged to. She has also brought to the new band two compositions from The Great Society with her: White Rabbit and Someone to Love. After the addition of Grace in 1967 the band released their first album. The album is considered to be one of the early works of psychedelic music and counterculture age. That was a tremendous success. The previous album’s success inspired the band to release their next album that very same year. It was a breakthrough album after Bathing at Baxter’s and it had a darker rock sound. Jefferson Airplane was in the process of disbandment during the early 1970s. The new group Jefferson Starship was founded by several members of the group including Grace. In 1974, the new band released the album Dragon-Fly. It did well, and was gold certified. In the opening ceremonies of the 1976 World Science Fiction Convention, one of the songs from the album desde Hyperdrive was used. The 1975 album of the band ibid. Octopus spawned the single ibid. Miracle that was a great hit. On the Billboard chart the single hit No.3 which was the highest-charting single the band had ever had until that time. She’d already embarked on a solo career by the mid-seventies. Her debut solo album was released in 1974, followed in 1980 by some Dreams. Her solo albums were recorded without any assistance from previous members of the band. In 1984, her final solo album leichSoftware was released. It had the songs Right Call it Wrong and Me and Me as well. She had rejoined Jefferson Starship by this time. All of Jefferson Airplane’s original members reunited in 1989 to record one final album, the self-titled almost Jefferson Airplane. The album was produced by Ron Nevison who had made many previous albums from the band. Soon afterwards Grace retired from music.
