Showmax Kodi d-on Developer’s PayPal Account Targeted by IrdetoByNitish Singh-December 1 2018.122 Figure 1 Photo Courtesy of Matt Huisman (YouTube) The anti-piracy outfit filed a Dmca notice against developer Matt Huisman and downgraded its software. The add-on is entirely legitimate and has not in any way monetized off Showmax services. A developer who released a Kodi add-on for Showmax faced legal pressureTf claims that the developer Matt Huisman had limited his PayPal account despite not being monetized in any way for him to earn money from it. Huisman said he did not make use of the add-on himself and did it only because people in the community needed him. PayPal’s email to Huisman reads “We’re in touch with you as we’ve received a report that your website at www.matthuisman.nz is actually violating Irdeto Bv’s IP. Such a violation also violates the Acceptable Use Policy of PayPal. If you feel that your sales do not breach Irdeto Bv’s intellectual property rights please fill in the attached Objection to Infringement form. “The add-on provided users with only legal subscriptions who did not promote or allow piracy in any way to access Showmax content on Kodi. Although it is ‘ legitimate ‘ Irdeto attacked the add-on on behalf of Showmax and the developer is facing legal pressure. The online subscription service is South African and competes against the country’s likes of Netflix and Amazon Video. Huisman has not made money out of the add-on outside of the voluntary donations on his website. There are other projects he worked on as well, which makes it clear that not all of his contributions for his work on the Showmax addon were automatically earned.
