Michael “Flea” Balzary was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, on October 16, 1962. As a bassist for the
Red hot chili peppers, “Flea” is one of the most famous rock artists. The band, known for their funk-punk infused sound, have enjoyed great success since the release of their 1991 debut album.

Flea (“Flea” in English), however, began as a jazz performer before crossing over to rock.
Some of his early musical influences came from his stepfather, a jazz musician, and included Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. Growing up, Flea fell in love with the trumpet and became a musical prodigy. His family life, however, was unstable. His parents separated when he was little and his stepfather had a problem with alcohol.

In 1983, Flea formed what would become the legendary Red hot chili peppers with his high school friends Kiedis, Slovak and Jack Irons. With the harsh and hypnotic sound of 70s punk and funk, the group was very popular on the Hollywood club scene. The Chili Peppers were known for their crazy onstage as well as their wild lives offstage.
Their early albums didn’t have a commercial impact, but the group kept working. Flea and his teammates were deeply hurt by Slovak’s death from an overdose in 1988. Things soon began to change with the addition of guitarist John Frusciante and drummer Chad Smith. The Chili Peppers began to gain attention in the mainstream media for their innovative sound, including broadcasting their videos on MTV. Mother’s milk (1989) featured a version of Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground,” as well as his own composition, “Knock me down“.
The Chili Peppers reached new heights with BloodSugarSexMagik 1991, with a little help from famed producer Rick Rubin. With hits like “Under the bridgeThe album went on to sell over 4 million copies. The group soon went through some line-up changes, temporarily replacing Frusciante with Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro. Californication By 1999, Frusciante was back in the band. The Chili Peppers continued their winning streak with songs like “Scar tissue” Y “Otherside“.
The Chili Peppers demonstrated tremendous staying power on the charts, racking up accomplishments more than two decades after their inception. With 2006’s Stadium Arcadium, the band delighted fans with songs like “Dani California“After a long rest, Flea returned to the album charts with I’m with you 2011, with his bandmates Kiedis and Smith and new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer.
With the years,
Flea has remained a constant force within the Chili Peppers, keeping the band going. He and Kiedis have stayed with the group from the beginning, enduring all kinds of personal challenges. In 2012, they received special recognition for their contributions when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Outside of his work with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea he has recorded and performed with other artists. He has worked as a musician on albums by Mick Jagger, Alanis Morissette, and Johnny Cash. He also teamed up with Thom Yorke of Radiohead, to Atoms for Peace in 2009. On another collaborative project, he worked with Blur fame’s Damon Albarn and Tony Allen, to form Rocket Juice and the Moon, who released his debut album in 2012.
In his personal life, Flea He is married to model Frankie Rayder. The couple have a daughter, Sunny Bepop Balzary, who was born in 2005. He also has an older daughter, Clara, from his first marriage to Loesha Zeviar. Flea He credits his children with helping him to give up his excesses. He saw the destructive powers of drug and alcohol abuse. In 1993, Flea was with actor River Phoenix, a close friend, when he suffered a fatal overdose. This devoted father has worked to share his musical knowledge with the children. In 2001, he helped establish the Silverlake Conservatory of Music to provide music instruction to young people. He even ran the Los Angeles Marathon in 2010 to raise money for his nonprofit organization.
Heavily tattooed, Flea he has a portrait of the legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix on one of his arms. He also has his high school nickname, “Flea”, tattooed on his head, and his ex-wife’s first name appears on his chest.
