American politician Elaine Lan Chao is the 18th Secretary of Transportation for the United States of America. As of January 31, 2017, she has served in the role. Elaine had also served under the administration of Geroge W. Bush as the U.S. Secretary of Labor for eight years from 2001 through 2009. The 12th Peace Corps Director was born to Chinese parents James Si-Cheng Chao, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, and Ruth Mulan Chu Chao, a historian, on March 26, 1953 in Taipei Taiwan. After the Chinese Civil War erupted, Lan Chao had fled the Chinese mainland. In the year 1961, when she was eight years old, Chao’s family immigrated to the USA. In Taipei, Elaine went to the kindergarten and first grade Tsai Hsing Elementary School. In 1975 Elaine graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Mount Holyoke College Massachusetts. She was later awarded a Mba Degree from Harvard Business School in 1979. She has received a Ph.D. in Human Letters from Georgetown University along with 37 other Honorary Doctorates. Elaine Chao is the first Asian-American woman to be elected to the President’s Cabinet in the history of the United States.
