ByBill Toulas-February 9, 2019.038 The Ministry of Public Security will now be allowed to perform penetration tests on anyone. New regulations on an already controversial law should set Chinese authorities free from any restrictions. The Chinese Government has enhanced its 2017 cybersecurity legislation by adding penetration testing sessions for provisionsconduct to anyone in the country online. As the latest rules anticipate all companies and organizations that use more than five internet-connected computers, the Ministry of Public Security (Mps) is now candidates for a pen-test. Such changes and improvements are ostensibly implemented to increase the safety of the Chinese people ensuring that databases are adequately protected and that no data leaks or other significant cybersecurity accidents occur. Nonetheless, taking into account the overall role of the specific government, the protection of the people is probably only the official reason, while the main point is to make legal higher levels of invasive interventions. The Chinese government wants full control over all of the country’s online organizations and why are they asking for their permission to perform inspections of their networks when they can do so whenever they want, and without even having to remind them of the fact? The following list of clauses shows what importance the Chinese authorities attach to the right of individuals to privacy. Conduct in-person or remote inspections of network security defenses taken by Chinese-based companies. Inside China’s border check for “prohibited content” barred. During on-site inspections, log in the security response plans. To scan for vulnerabilities conduct penetration tests. Carry out remote checks without notifying companies. Share any data gathered with other state agencies. The right to have two members of the People’s Armed Police (Pap) present to execute procedures during on-site inspections. What experts think of the above is that China needs to improve its data collection activities and so having its hands into anybody’s database is a great way to do this. After all the “copying any user information discovered during the inspections” clause clearly shows their intentions. The vagueness underpinning these new laws does not leave much room in either of them for precise exclusions or restrictions. With this change the people of China and every foreigner living in the People’s Republic have woken up for their online rights to an even more gloomy day. A recent TrendMicro report revealed two WordPress vulnerabilities impacting versions prior to versions 5.0.1 and 4.9.9. All vulnerabilities were identified to WordPress but have not yet been completely patched. Users are asked to upgrade to the Platform’s latest version to reduce security risks. WordPress is one of the most popular content management systems and has control over a third of all internet websites. It has become a major target for cyber criminals with millions of users using the site. One of the platform’s biggest sources of cyber attacks is the use of obsolete plugins, or an outdated WordPress version itself. There are 2 major vulnerabilities in WordPress, according to a TrendMicro report. If exploited attackers could execute Php code and gain full control of the system. The two bugs concern versions 5 (previous to 5.0.1) and 4 (prior to 4.9.9) of WordPress. WordPress has already been told by security researchers of the issue. .041 Figure 1 TrendMicro Image Courtesy It is critical that WordPress users keep their plugins updated and the platform itself. For older versions of the application, old vulnerabilities are continually found, and updates take time to deploy. Older version of the content management system may have more bugs which have not yet been discovered. TrendMicro recommends obsolete plugins in favor of newer plugins that are no longer in production. Recently in the Wp Cost Estimation Payments Forms Builder plugin, which was abused by hackers, an Ajax related bug has been discovered. The size of the attack is unclear, with over 11000 downloads reported on the official website as well as many illegally downloaded third-partys.
