What does that mean?
Live Science defines TSS as an uncommon but life-threatening condition caused by certain types of bacteria formed by toxins. The main type of bacteria which these toxins can create is S. Aurora. This bacteria lives on the skin and mucous membranes and can grow rapidly and produce toxins under certain conditions while it does not cause symptoms.
As mentioned above TSS is uncommon. It doesn’t mean, though, it will happen to you. According to Cackovic TSS 1 in 100,000 menstruating women was affected. Cleveland Clinic has found that women who use tampons between the ages of 15 and 25 are at increased risk. Older women are more likely to have antibodies which battle against S. Auroreus which could be the explanation why TSS affects them at a lower rate. 5/5.200 5/5.200 Feminine goods | Matka Wariatka/iStock/Getty Images Plus Tampons are the only source
The only people at risk are common misconceptions. As a consequence of the tampons, only about one-half of TSS cases occur in women. The disease has also affected men’s children, and postmenopausal women. Other risk factors for TSS include skin infections surgical wounds that burn childbirth and the use of packings to avoid nosebleeds, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) says.
TSS can cause liver failure and death in the kidneys. Therefore, watching out for the flu-like symptoms of TSS is extremely important. According to the NIH all of a sudden high fever and chills, nausea or vomiting diarrhea and dizziness can all be signs that the disease has affected you. You may also find a widespread rash that resembles sunburn on your skin.
How to stop TSS
The Cleveland Clinic advises moving from tampons to pads every other day or during the worst menstrual discharge periods. Always go for the lowest possible absorbency alternative when using tampons. The Cheat Facebook Cover!
