Her branch of the family reigned over the Principality of Reuss-Gera until 1918, although she is not directly descended from any of the rulers. She is the daughter of Prince Heinrich Ruzzo Reuss, a native of Switzerland and Sweden, and his wife, Princess Mette Reuss, (née Rinde), a native of Norway.
