Jacqueline Sahagian More Articles 23 June 2014 4/4.714 Source: NBC NBC did some more casting for its forthcoming drama based on the murders of Charles Manson. Aquarius stars David Duchovny of Californication as Los Angeles police sergeant Sam Hodiak who begins investigating the hippie cults that Manson leads before the gruesome murders of the Tate-LaBianca are committed. Now it’s announced that Gethin Anthony’s Game of Thrones will feature Manson. Charles Manson is one of the country’s most notorious serial killers and is sometimes credited with ending the hippies ‘ peace and love movement of the 1960s by the gruesome murders he committed with the aid of his brainwashed cults who, through a mixture of psychedelic drugs and coercion, worshipped Manson like a god and killed himself on his behalf. Manson’s currently serving a life sentence in jail. TVLine also announced that Emma Dumont of Bunheads will play one of the young Emma Karn women Manson draws into his cult. Manson is targeting Karn as part of a larger conspiracy involving her father, said an influential TVLine attorney. Friday Night Lights ‘ Grey Damon will play Hodiak’s new partner, who helps hunt for Karn and learn more about Manson’s methods of seducing and controlling women. NBC describes the partner character of the “rebellious undercover cop Brian Shafe” as someone Hodiak wants to get in with the hippies he has to challenge and “a guy who smokes a joint more easily than walking a beat.” “It’s not long until they come upon a small-time cults leader seeking marginalized women to join his cause. From there they follow the trail of this guy down a rabbit hole of women killing drugs and cultural revolution. However, they could hardly realize that the guy they chase would eventually become the murderer that we now remember as Charles Manson. He was a lost soul who desperately wanted to enter the ‘ 60s music scene until something snapped. This is the series that will investigate the game between cat-and-mouse and the police, “says NBC about the film. The network says the one-hour series will begin set in 1967 and will run for several seasons finally ending with the 1971 murders. Aquarius’ idea sounds pretty close to another show that this year was really popular — the True Detective of HBO. While that series was not based on a true story, two detective partners were interested in investigating a grisly case involving the darker side of humanity and in particular the victimization of women. Airing on a regular network won’t give Aquarius the same content-related freedoms True Detective had — and Duchovny isn’t Matthew McConaughey — but NBC might assume that those who liked True Detective would tune in for a series about the Manson family.
