Carl Winston Lumbly He was born in August 1951 in Minneapolis (Minnesota), in the United States. The son of Jamaican immigrants, his father was an avid reader who inspired Carl in their literary tastes.

After graduation from the Macalester College, where he obtained his degree in English, he began working in Associated Press in his hometown. During that time, he also worked freelance, writing for various newspapers and magazines.
