Can iPhone 6 Set a New Quarterly Sales Record for Apple? Assuming that the sales estimate of 80 million iPhone 6 units by Topology Research Institute is correct; Apple would have to sell 20 million units every month by the end of 2014 in order to reach that figure. That would include the selling of 20 million units during the abbreviated September launch month. If Apple can sell the remaining 60 million units in the last three months of 2014, the company based in Cupertino will set a new iPhone sales record. During the fourth quarter of 2013 the most iPhones Apple has ever sold in a quarter is 51 million units. However, the fourth quarter revenue figures this year could go much higher if a higher percentage of overall sales happens during the three months following the products scheduled to be released in September. While this would be an incredible number of Apple’s iPhones for sale, there are many factors that say it’s very possible. Apple’s larger-screen iPhones are expected to draw new buyers who want a big handset and encourage more existing owners of iPhones to upgrade. Market research indicates that an increase in screen size would support Apple s iPhone. According to analysis by Medium s Alex Barredo, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 variant will have a screen size that is similar to the current industry average of five inches. The 5.5-inch model on the other hand will provide an alternative for Apple users who want a phablet-sized device. Similarly, the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 model is likely to boost Apple’s iPhone sales in Asian countries where phone / tablet hybrids have proved particularly popular. According to market research firm Canalys smartphones with 5 inches or larger screens accounted for 43% of total smartphone shipments in the Asia Pacific region and 39% of shipments in Greater China during the first quarter of 2014. Canalys also noticed that a third of all smartphones delivered in this year’s March quarter had screens which were 5 inches or larger. While phablets are an increasingly important smartphone market segment, analysts at Topology Research Institute believe the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 model will outsell the 5.5-inch model by far. Apple will sell approximately 70 million 4.7-inch iPhone 6 units and 8 to 10 million 5.5-inch model units according to TRI’s estimates. In addition to the widely rumored screen size improvements Apple’s next-generation iPhones are also expected to feature an upgraded camera and longer battery life with a faster A8 processor. It appears meanwhile that Apple’s suppliers are ramping up for an unusually large production run. According to industry sources cited by Taiwan’s Economic Daily News Apple Supplier Hon Hai Precision Industry also known as Foxconn is growing the total size of its workforce by 10 per cent by hiring 100,000 new staff to prepare for the iPhone 6 mass production. Likewise, Apple supplier Pegatron has embarked on a big hiring spree.
