Background Jurisdiction Reputation
“2/2.218.jpg” Let’s see where Betternet comes from and what its subscribers mean by this. Checking the jurisdiction under which your chosen VPN falls is a vital piece of information so be sure to know which country laws apply to your use of the VPN in question.
Jurisdiction Applicable laws
Betternet comes from Canada-and this is the first piece of information that concerns us about this VPN. This county is a member of the IPTV provider’s 5-Eyes Intelligence Alliancecharge money to expose digital piratesban ‘ copyright infringement ‘ of VPN services. Needless to say, you can conclude that Canadian ISPs are doing their best to collect any data they can, and are not afraid of analyzing your personal data. Finally you should also know that AnchorFree owns Betternet which also owns Hotspot Shield. This VPN is from the United States, and has a long history of being accused of logging and selling private data to advertisers. We can not imagine Betternet being much different with that said.
Previous data leaks
Betternet has been the subject of numerous reports in the past. Perhaps the most surprising one was a report which described Betternet as an apphijacked malware infected by a hacker. Betternet served malicious ads which affected millions of users worldwide during that period.
Applications supported by platforms

MacOS Windows Desktop Platform Compatibility Platform. Mobile IOS Android Platforms.Unfortunately you can use Betternet to stream media platforms or any other device on routers. This is a major drawback since you’re forced to install and run this VPN software on any device you want to protect. And you’ll also be able to use Betternet simultaneously on 6 computers.
Install Initial Configuration
“2/2.220.jpg” You need to get a subscription to use Betternet. However this VPN comes with a complicated installation method which very aggressively pushes the free version. If you know there’s a premium version you’d think Betternet is free if only available. “2/2.221.jpg” To subscribe to Betternet, the first step is to. However at a later stage this can also be achieved. No matter whether you want to sign up now or later you will need to download this app to your computer. We tested this VPN on a Windows 10 PC where there is no distractions to the installation. Just go through the installation process, and you will be able to use Betternet in less than one minute. Strangely enough after deployment you won’t be greeted by the log-in screen of this VPN. Instead you will be asked to take a trial lasting 7 days. Even if you are a paying customer, you will embrace this trial at a later stage and sign-in. “2/2.222.jpg” Now here’s how to log in as a paying customer to the application. Prominent features
“2/2.223.jpg” In terms of its features, Betternet is quite barebones. It protects you from active leaks but there are no advanced features you can find here. Our Rating: 3/10. VPN Compatibility Checklist DNS Leak Protection YES IPv6 Leak Protection N / A NO Anti-Malware Ad-Blocker NO Unlimited Server Switches YES Database Count
“2/2.224.jpg” Betternet comes with an undisclosed server count distributed through 78 countries. Many of these we believe to be virtual servers that question their usability. Our Score: Score 4/10. Here’s how many servers this VPN has at how many locations and countries it provides. We’ve also tested if you can also connect to individual servers. Server Number N / A Number of Locations 98 Country Specific Cities Selection YES (US-based only). Unlimited swapping YES It is fairly impossible to find out how many servers this VPN provides. Even its official documentation states you’re going to get 10 + countries to choose from. Using our premium subscription we saw a list of 78 countries once we logged-in. Maybe all of those countries were added recently? Well this is hard to say and Betternet’s website and documentation is to blame.
Use-friendliness
“2/2.225.jpg” Betternet comes with a simple user interface, which often looks unfinished. It doesn’t allow you to fine-tune your user experience, and transparency is severely lacking. Our Rating: 3/10. “2/2.226.jpg” Click the hamburger button in the top-left corner to dive somewhat deeper into this VPN. Here is where you will find the following options: Contact Us: You can use the ‘ Contact Us ‘ button to contact the company, which opens three more categories. Clicking on any of these will open your email client with a new draft email message with your logs in it. Settings: Betternet leaves nothing to fine-tune. You can choose to prevent IP leaks and to allow Betternet on safe or unsafe Wi-Fi networks and ‘ other ‘ forms of Wi-Fi automatically (we’re not exactly sure what the ‘ other ‘ category entails). “Jpg 2/2.227.jpg”Unfortunately you can use Betternet to stream media platforms or any other device on routers. Or maybe you want to download content from Amazon Prime and Hulu BBC iPlayer? With all those platforms we have tried using Betternet and here are the results. Media Streaming Torrenting Support Netflix US NO Hulu BBC iPlayer YES Amazon Prime Video NO Torrenting (P2P) As with our tests Betternet only succeeded in unblocking BBC iPlayer (and managed to stream content to HD). No other streaming platforms require us to access them and this also means that Betternet does not (at least not right now) function with Netflix. It is interesting to note that Betternet supports exchange (torrenting) of P2P files. You need a server near your physical location for that (and to get the best speeds possible). Be sure to read the rest of this Betternet review to check what kinds of speeds you can expect.
Security Privacy
Although your data is not actively leaked, Betternet collects a great deal of anonymous information and comes with past security charges. Our Rating: 3/10. Don’t forget that any VPN’s primary mission is to keep you 100 per cent online protected. This is done through high-level encryption and through VPN protocols. Keep reading to see how well Betternet is doing this job.
Supported encryption protocols
Nevertheless it is important to note that only Betternet can rely on those secure technologies. We can’t really know if it uses AES-256 OpenVPN and IPSec and there’s no way in the application itself to change your protocol.
Logging Policy
Betternet makes every effort to reassure you that your private data is not being collected. This is not true, however, and Betternet logs a lot of data. This includes your IP address (which apparently will be deleted once your session is finished) the unique mobile ID OS version of the network language information. Speed
“2/2.231.jpg” Betternet slowed down on average by around 10 per cent. This is an excellent result-although you can’t take advantage of the peed for streaming video. Our Rating: 9/10. Now it’s time to check how well that VPN is doing. We’ve checked Betternet’s provided both local and remote servers and here are the findings. Figure 1 Our stats on baseline. First we tested the speed of our ‘ naked ‘ Web connection (which is enabled without this VPN). We managed to get downloads for 148.66 Mbps and uploads for 9.79 Mbps. Next it’s time for a nearby server to check its speed. “2/2.233.jpg” Figure 2 Running the nearby Betternet server. We’re in Europe and we’ve managed to find a server in one of our neighbors. We got 147.46 Mbps for downloads this time around, and 9.07 Mbps for uploads. All that’s left is finally to check remote servers. Figure 3 An Betternet remote server performance. We’ve managed to get 120.59 Mbps for downloads and 5.57 Mbps for uploads after connecting to servers in the USA. We have to say that these results are much better than we were hoping to see especially when it comes to remote connections. Download Speed Upload Speed Reduction of 148.66 Mbps 9.79 Mbps 0% Nearby Server 147.46 Mbps 0.8% Remote Server 120.59 Mbps 5.57 Mbps 18.8%Your best bet is to directly send an email to Betternet and explain the problem you are having. You will however have to wait 48 to 72 hours to receive a response with the highest priority from premium customers. Besides helpful tips and guides on how to use this application, what’s missing is a live chat option. Even the business blog is updated every couple of months.
Pricing
“2/2.236.jpg” We bet you won’t be able to find the pricing information about Betternet even after searching its website for quite some time (here’s by the way a link to Betternet’s pricing plans). For some reason this VPN promotes their free plan rather than prioritizing paid plans. The pricing structure here is to speak of paid plans. Total price per month Savings 1 month $1.99 0 percent 6 months $23.99 $3.99 12 months $35.99 $2.99 75 percent Betternet is definitely overpriced when it comes to its monthly plan. In terms of its long-term plans the situation is better. Betternet can only be subscribed for $2.99 per month through its annual plan, saving you 75 percent. Though, we’re not sure if that’s such a good idea as Betternet makes no guarantees about the future development of its VPN service.
Differentiating Free vs. Paid
Betternet also comes with a free plan heavily publicized. So let’s look at what you’re going to get with this plan, and how it’s compared to the premium subscriptions of the company. Unlimited Project server number 1 Totally activated. Quality (Velocity) Limited. It is also important to note that your Web connection is not encrypted by the Free plan. Only those with premium subscriptions are also getting a dedicated support team. And most importantly, videos and ads sponsor the free plan-unlike the paid plan.
Do we suggest Betternet? PROS: Easy to use Fast performance.
“2/2.237.jpg” CONS: Limited set of features Comes from Canada Highly problematic past Collects lots of data Half-baked Overpriced customer support. OUR SCORE: from 10, 3.6! While a lot of new titles are also landing on HBO’s streaming platforms, there are also some that expire. However, it doesn’t mean they’re never going to be back so keep an eye out for them in the months ahead if you can’t watch them before they go. We do suggest that you set up your watch list with anything you want to watch again. We are particularly partial to Deadpool 2 so that this month one will make our list.
