Avery Johnson – Biography of Avery Johnson

Avery johnson is a well-known former basketball player, current coach, of American origin, famous for his participation with the Dallas mavericks of the National Basketball Association.

He was born on March 25, 1965 in the city of New Orleans, located within the state of Louisiana, United States.

Used to perform as Point Guard with a height of 1.8 meters and an approximate weight of 84 kilograms.

In 1983 he took his high school, the Saint Augustine High School, to conquer the Louisiana State Championship. From there he decided to join the New Mexico Junior College.

A short time later he received an invitation to join the Cameron University where he started playing college basketball with very good stats.

Finally, he finished his studies at the Southern University from where he left to play with him USBL Palm Beach Stingrays, since he had not received an invitation to join the NBA draft.

In 1988 the Seattle SuperSonics decided to give him the opportunity to play within the NBA, where he managed to stay playing for an incredible 16 years.

From 1990 to 1992 he played with the Denver nuggets to go on to play with the San antonio spurs during the 1992-93 season.
Shortly afterwards he was transferred to the Golden state warriors for a year.

After his return to the Spurs, became one of the pillars of the team and became much loved by all his public, since his skills as a leader led the team to rise in the statistics.

Finally, he was an essential piece in the team of the Spurs what in 1999 reached the NBA Championship against the New York Knicks, next to the rising star Tim duncan.

A short time later, to the total indifference of the people, Johnson was sold to Dallas mavericks in 2001, where he remained until the end of his playing career.

It wasn’t long until he enrolled in the Mavericks as a player coach, under the guidance of Don nelson, who had been his own coach very recently.

Finally on October 28, 2004 he retired from his career to concentrate 100% on becoming the technical director of the Mavericks.

This event occurred five months later, on March 19, 2005.
It was thus that Mavericks won 16 of the last 18 games of the 2004-05 season, making Johnson in the coach of the month of April according to NBA.

The season 2005-06 continued with great successes for the coach, since he managed to win the trophy of NBA Coach of the Year.
That season the Mavericks won 66 of the 82 regular matches and entered the Playoffs.

To everyone’s surprise Johnson led to Mavs until the finals, for the first time in its history, having defeated the San antonio spurs, defending champions, and Phoenix suns.

They finally lost the series against Miami Heat, which did not prevent Mavericks become one of the best teams in the NBA.

During the 2006-07 season they again reached the Playoffs, but this time they did it with all the glory, since they entered first with the best record of victories of the NBA, 67 in total.

Unfortunately they fell against the Golden state warriors, led by the former coach of the Mavericks, Don nelson.

At the moment Johnson prepares his men for the start of the 2007-08 season that promises a new streak of success for the brand new coach.
