Researcher Warns of a macOs Weakness that Apple Refuses to PatchAn Italian researcher reveals a weakness that enables hackers to bypass Gatekeeper. The researcher has made the PoC code and a video publicly available but Apple has not released a patch yet. Apple engineers have included a related fix in their previous patch but it probably was not sufficiently successful. An Italian security researcher named Filippo Cavallarin macOs Mojave 10.14.5 and older is vulnerable to an arbitrary code execution bug that Apple refuses to take into consideration. The particular vulnerability allows a hacker to bypass Gatekeeper which is the built-in macOs security mechanism and execute anything they want without thinking about certificate verification or other validations. Cavallarin has discovered that the macOs automount functionality which treats external drives and networks as safe locations can be misused and combined with symbolic links to execute any code without poking the Gatekeeper. To illustrate the vulnerability, a zip archive has been created by the researcher containing symbolic links pointing to the automount endpoints he manages. This file can be extracted and followed to the victim downloaded onto the target system. The symlink brings the victim to a place that is managed by the attacker and has never been verified by the Gatekeeper and that means the hacker may do whatever they want, including executing malicious code. There’s the Cve-2019-8589 in the “DesktopServices” fixes segment that promises enhanced controls that prevent malicious applications from bypassing Gatekeeper tests. Are those changes not enough to mitigate the problem identified by the Italian researcher or has he skipped the fix and claims falsely that an unpatched bug has been disclosed? Since he has explained that at the beginning of his article he used macOs X version 10.14.5 I am willing to rule out the possibility of the latter being the case here.
