ByBill Toulas-October 31, 2019.566 After an international activity, an international network of e-commerce scammers has been brought down. Europol detained 60 people from 19 nations, thus saving 93k in the process. Through tracking fraudulent transactions the investigation teams find who is behind the scams. The operation which took the name “2019 e-commerce action” resulted in 40 house raids and searches for the discovery of 6500 fraudulent transactions and the confiscation of various data and cash card devices. Having said that, the investigators believe that the 60 people are responsible for damages of up to five million Euros although they managed to prevent another 93,000 during the operation itself that took place from September 23 to October 4, 2019. The investigations which led to the fraudsters being tracked had the character of “following the money.” Some of them booked train tickets using compromised credit card data while others bought vouchers which they tried to repay to cover their tracks through other payment methods. In many cases international (outside Europe) banks were involved and therefore Europol had to work with other investigative teams as well. All in all, they reported more than 1000 fraudulent bookings and transactions made by the 60 people arrested in the case. As we have addressed e-commerce threats several times in the past couple of months, this is a particularly problematic environment where we see a growing number of attacks. Actors use swarms of e-botsskimming scripts that capture the credit card numbers and Cvv codes of unsuspecting customers and then use them to create online buy stuff from clone cards or simply sell that information to other actors. If you want to stay safe from all of the above, make sure your internet connection is stable and you choose other online payment methods and check everywhere for signs of fraud. Finally, you will periodically track the operation of your bank account and recognise something you don’t know with your card issuer. The sooner you realize you were infringed the better.
