Rafael Romero Quesada, better known as Alonso Quesada, was a Canarian poet considered one of the most important figures of poetic modernism. The vast majority of his works were not published until after his death, which was very premature since he was barely thirty-five years old when it happened.
The modernist Canarian poetic school is straddling the generation of ninety-eight and that of twenty-seven, creating a current related to literature that is part of the legacy of the Canary Islands and that is considered insurmountable today in its environment.
Among the works that stand out the most by Alonso Quesada is the Linen of Dreams, in which he commented on the daily way of life of his native Canary, although with a subtle note of irony. Some scholars dared to call it the “Canary Azorin” for the detail and attention it expresses around the little things in works like this one. The poem La umbría and the non-rhyming works Crónicas de la ciudad y de la noche also stand out.
A year before his death, the playwright and poet had prepared a compilation of poems that, however, remained unpublished until twenty years after his death, with some compositions that recall in some of his verses the also poet, in this case Andalusian, Juan Ramón Jiménez. Everything points to the premature death of the author truncating a flourishing career, and some have dared to say that if the world of literature, poetry and letters had not happened, the Spanish language would have had a new generation even more important. Modernism began at the end of the 19th century, although each of the different groups of both Spanish and South American writers have their specific characteristics, although both are strongly influenced by two literary currents coming from France as well as a spiritual crisis during that same period.
In addition to writing poetry, there are also other types of works that this author wrote, such as prose narratives and even plays.
Little else can be said about this young Canarian author, except perhaps recommending to all fans of literature and the world of arts and letters to take a look at some of his writings, such as The dispersed paths or Smoking Room.
